Hamidou Diallo, born on July 31, 1998, is an American professional basketball player. He currently plays for the Shanxi Loongs in China. Before turning pro, he played college basketball for the Kentucky Wildcats. Hamidou was considered one of the best young basketball players in 2017. He is also famous for winning the exciting NBA Slam Dunk Contest in 2019.

Hamidou Diallo's Early Basketball Journey
High School Years
Hamidou Diallo started his high school basketball career at John Bowne High School in Flushing, New York. During his second year, he showed great skill. He averaged 17.1 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game.
In the summer of 2015, Diallo played for the New York Jayhawks. He averaged 22.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. He was also invited to special basketball camps like NBPA Top 100.
Diallo later moved to Putnam Science Academy in Putnam, Connecticut. As a junior, he averaged 17.0 points and 4.0 rebounds. He helped his team achieve an impressive 35 wins and 7 losses.
During the summer of 2016, he played for the New York Rens. He averaged 18.6 points and 2.1 assists. In his senior year, he led his team to a 38-3 record. He averaged 19.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists.
Many top colleges wanted Diallo to play for them. These included the University of Kentucky, University of Arizona, and University of Kansas.
College Career at Kentucky
On January 7, 2017, Diallo decided to play for the University of Kentucky. He finished high school early to join the Wildcats team. He practiced with the team but did not play in any games that year.
Even without playing a college game, Diallo was considered a top player for the 2017 NBA draft. However, he decided to return to Kentucky for the 2017–18 season. He wanted to gain more experience.
During his college season, Diallo averaged 10.0 points and 3.6 rebounds per game.
Hamidou Diallo's Professional Career
Starting in the NBA: Oklahoma City Thunder (2018–2021)
Hamidou Diallo was chosen by the Brooklyn Nets in the 2018 NBA draft. He was the 45th pick overall. His draft rights were then traded to the Charlotte Hornets and finally to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
On July 28, 2018, Diallo officially signed with the Thunder. He made his NBA debut on October 16, 2018. He scored four points in a game against the Golden State Warriors.
On November 19, 2018, Diallo had a career-high game. He scored 18 points against the Sacramento Kings.
Slam Dunk Champion
A big moment in Diallo's career happened on February 16, 2019. He won the exciting NBA Slam Dunk Contest. He was the first player from the Oklahoma City Thunder to win this title.
During the contest, he performed amazing dunks. For one dunk, he jumped over basketball legend Shaquille O'Neal. He also did a "honey dip" dunk, made famous by Vince Carter. He even showed a Superman undershirt while hanging from the rim! In another dunk, he jumped over rapper Quavo.
Playing for the Detroit Pistons (2021–2023)
On March 13, 2021, Diallo was traded to the Detroit Pistons. This trade involved Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk and a future draft pick.
In August 2021, Diallo signed a new two-year contract with the Pistons. Unfortunately, his 2021–22 season ended early. He had a finger injury in March 2022.
On December 29, 2022, Diallo was suspended for one game. This was due to a disagreement during a game against the Orlando Magic. In March 2023, he suffered an ankle injury. This injury caused him to miss the rest of the 2022–23 season.
Time with Washington Wizards and Capital City Go-Go (2023–2024)
On October 21, 2023, Diallo signed with the Washington Wizards. However, he was waived the same day. He then joined the Capital City Go-Go on October 30.
He signed a short 10-day contract with the Wizards on January 9, 2024. After that, he returned to play for the Capital City Go-Go.
Moving to China: Shanxi Loongs (2024–Present)
On September 11, 2024, Hamidou Diallo signed with the Shanxi Loongs. This team plays in the Chinese Basketball Association.
Playing for the National Team
Hamidou Diallo has also played for the United States national basketball team. In 2016, he helped the under-18 team win a gold medal. This was at the FIBA Americas Under-18 Championship. In 2017, he won a bronze medal at the 2017 FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup in Egypt.
