Hamidou Diallo (born July 31, 1998) is an American professional basketball player. He currently plays for the Shanxi Loongs in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA). Before turning pro, he played college basketball for the Kentucky Wildcats. Hamidou was considered one of the top young basketball players in his age group. He is also famous for winning the 2019 NBA Slam Dunk Contest.

Early Life and High School Basketball
Hamidou Diallo grew up in Queens, New York. He started his high school basketball journey at John Bowne High School in Flushing, New York. Later, he moved to Putnam Science Academy in Putnam, Connecticut.
As a sophomore, he scored about 17 points and grabbed nearly 7 rebounds per game. During the summer of 2015, he played for the New York Jayhawks, an amateur basketball team. He averaged 22.5 points and 5 rebounds per game in their league. He was also invited to special basketball camps like NBPA Top 100 and Adidas Nations.
In his junior year at Putnam Science Academy, he averaged 17 points and 4 rebounds. He helped his team achieve a great record of 35 wins and 7 losses. The next summer, he joined another amateur team, the New York Rens. He led them to the Peach Jam, a big basketball tournament. In his senior year (2016–17), he averaged 19 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists. His team had an impressive 38 wins and 3 losses.
Many top colleges wanted Hamidou to play for them. These included the University of Kentucky, University of Arizona, Indiana University, University of Kansas, Syracuse University, and the University of Connecticut.
College Basketball Career
On January 7, 2017, Hamidou Diallo decided to play for the University of Kentucky. He finished high school early to join the Wildcats team in the middle of that season. He practiced with the team but did not play in any games that year.
Even though he hadn't played a college game, Hamidou decided to enter the 2017 NBA draft. However, on May 24, 2017, he announced he would return to Kentucky for the 2017–18 season. This was a big decision, as some experts thought he could have been picked in the first round of the draft.
During his college season, Hamidou averaged 10 points and 3.6 rebounds per game.
Professional Basketball Career
Oklahoma City Thunder (2018–2021)
Hamidou Diallo was chosen by the Brooklyn Nets as the 45th pick in the 2018 NBA draft on June 21, 2018. His draft rights were then traded to the Charlotte Hornets, and finally to the Oklahoma City Thunder. He officially signed with the Thunder on July 28, 2018.
He made his NBA debut on October 16, 2018. He scored 4 points in a game against the Golden State Warriors. On November 19, 2018, he scored a career-high 18 points against the Sacramento Kings.
A highlight of his time with the Thunder was winning the NBA Slam Dunk Contest on February 16, 2019. He was the first Thunder player to ever win this exciting competition. For one of his amazing dunks, he jumped over basketball legend Shaquille O'Neal. He also did a "honey dip" dunk, made famous by Vince Carter, and showed off a Superman undershirt. In another dunk, he jumped over rapper Quavo to finish with two hands.
Detroit Pistons (2021–2023)
On March 13, 2021, Hamidou was traded to the Detroit Pistons. He signed a new contract with the Pistons on August 19, 2021.
He faced some injuries during his time with the Pistons. In March 2022, he had a finger injury that ended his season early. In December 2022, he was suspended for one game due to an argument during a game. In March 2023, he suffered an ankle injury. This injury meant he missed the rest of the 2022–23 season.
Washington Wizards and Capital City Go-Go (2023–2024)
On October 21, 2023, Diallo signed with the Washington Wizards but was waived the same day. He then joined the Capital City Go-Go on October 30.
He signed a short 10-day contract with the Wizards on January 9, 2024. After that, he returned to play for the Capital City Go-Go.
Shanxi Loongs (2024–present)
On September 11, 2024, Hamidou Diallo signed with the Shanxi Loongs team in the Chinese Basketball Association.
National Team Career
Hamidou Diallo has also played for the U.S. national basketball team. In 2016, he helped the under-18 team win a gold medal at the FIBA Americas Under-18 Championship. In 2017, he won a bronze medal at the 2017 FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup in Egypt.
Personal Life
Hamidou Diallo grew up in LeFrak City, Queens, New York. His parents, Abdoulaye and Mariama, moved to the U.S. from Guinea.
