History of Edwardstone

The name "Edwardstone" comes from old English words meaning 'Eadweard's farm' or 'settlement'. The village was mentioned in the famous Domesday Book, which was a big survey of England made in 1086. Back then, it was called Eduardestuna.

Edwardstone Priory

There was once a monastery called Edwardstone Priory in the area known as Priory Green. It was started by Peter, who was the Bishop of Winchester, during the time of King John. This priory was connected to a larger monastery called Abingdon. Later, the monks who lived there moved to Colne Priory. The name "Priory Green" likely comes from this old monastery.

Famous People from Edwardstone

Edwardstone is known as the birthplace of John Winthrop. He was a very important person who helped found the Massachusetts Bay Colony in America. This colony was one of the first English settlements in what is now the United States.

Changes Over Time

In the past, Edwardstone was part of an area called the Babergh Hundred. Later, it became part of the Cosford Rural District in 1894. In 1974, it joined the Babergh district, which is part of the non-metropolitan county of Suffolk.

The village school in Edwardstone closed in 1960. Another independent school, Edwardstone House School, also closed its doors in 1993.
