Helensvale is a lively suburb located in the northern part of the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia. It's a great place to live, and in 2021, nearly 19,000 people called it home.

Exploring Helensvale's Location

Helensvale is surrounded by natural features and important roads. To the west, you'll find the Pacific Motorway, a major highway. The Coomera River flows along its northern edge. Saltwater Creek is to the north-east, and Coombabah Creek along with Coombabah Lake are to the south-east.

Saltwater Creek winds through the suburb from west to north, forming part of the north-east boundary. Much of Helensvale is used for homes, including special areas called canal estates. These allow boats to access the Coomera River and Saltwater Creek directly from people's backyards! There are also areas with mangrove swamps near Coombabah Creek. A small protected area called Saltwater Creek Conservation Park is in the western part of the suburb.

The Gold Coast railway line runs through Helensvale, connecting it to places like Coomera and Arundel. The suburb has its own train station, Helensvale railway station. The Gold Coast light rail (a tram system) also starts here, running south alongside the railway line.

Helensvale's History

The name Helensvale comes from a sugar plantation that was started around 1870 by Arthur Robinson and Ernest White. White named the plantation after his youngest sister, Helena.

Helensvale was officially recognized as a locality on March 31, 1979. Later, on February 7, 2003, it became known as a suburb.

Helensvale was one of the first suburbs on the Gold Coast to be planned with everything in one place. When its first residents moved in during the 1980s, they had a shopping centre, schools, a golf course, parks, and a bowls club ready for them.

  • Helensvale State School opened its doors on January 23, 1984.
  • Helensvale State High School welcomed students starting January 29, 1990.
  • The big shopping centre, Westfield Helensvale, opened on October 13, 2005.
  • The Helensvale Library opened in 2013, giving everyone a great place to read and learn.

How Many People Live Here?

In 2016, about 16,862 people lived in Helensvale. By 2021, the population had grown to 18,949 people.

Getting Around Helensvale

Helensvale is a very important place for transport on the Gold Coast. The Gold Coast Highway and the Pacific Motorway, which are the two main roads, both connect here.

The Helensvale railway station is a special hub where trains, trams, and buses all meet up. This is the only place on the Gold Coast where you can switch between all three! The G:link light rail system connects Helensvale to popular areas like Southport, Surfers Paradise, and Broadbeach. From Helensvale, you can also easily take a train to Brisbane with just one transfer.

There are also plans for a second train station in the northern part of the suburb, which might be called Hope Island railway station.

Helensvale State School

Helensvale State School is a government primary school for students from Prep to Year 6. It's located at 8 Lindfield Road. In 2017, over 1,000 students attended the school, with many dedicated teachers and staff. The school also has a special education program to support all learners.

Helensvale State High School

Helensvale State High School is a government secondary school for students from Year 7 to Year 12. You can find it at 243 Discovery Drive. In 2017, it was a large school with over 2,500 students and a big team of teachers and staff. Like the primary school, it also offers a special education program.

Local Amenities

The Gold Coast City Council runs a public library at Helensvale Plaza, on the corner of Lindfield Road and Sir John Overall Drive. It's a great place for everyone to borrow books, use computers, and join community programs.

Sports and Fun in Helensvale

Helensvale is a great place for sports!

  • The Helensvale Hornets are the local rugby league club. They play their home games at Robert Dalley Park.
  • The Helensvale Hogs RUFC are the local Rugby Union club. They play their home games at the park on Rugby Lane.

There are also swimming pools located next to Helensvale High School, right near the rugby union field, perfect for a swim or some training.
