Saltwater Creek borders Hope Island to the south-west and south. Coomera Island is to the east. This island means Hope Island does not have direct access to Moreton Bay.

Hope Harbour is a spot in the east where boats can get into the Coomera River. The Pacific Motorway is nearby to the west. It passes through the suburb of Helensvale.

A Glimpse into Hope Island's Past

The original name for this area, used by Indigenous people, was Boykambil.

Hope Island got its current name from Captain Louis Hope. He was a rich person from colonial times. In 1867, he was given the island then called Boykambil. This was to thank him for helping to grow the sugar industry in Queensland.

Captain Hope arrived in Moreton Bay in 1848. For the next 20 years, he built sugar farms. One sugar farm called ‘Rockholm’ was built on the island. The Grimes Family did most of the work to set it up. Later, the Sheehan and Davidson families owned the sugar and arrowroot farms. Captain Hope himself never lived on Hope Island. He preferred to live in Ormiston.
