Moreton Bay is a special area in Queensland, Australia. It's called a "locality" and is mostly made up of water and islands. This area is shared between two big cities: the City of Brisbane and the City of Redland.

Moreton Bay includes the large body of water known as Moreton Bay itself. It stretches from the mainland coasts of Brisbane and Redland all the way to the western sides of Moreton Island and North Stradbroke Island. Even though it's a named place, very few people live here. The 2021 census showed that Moreton Bay had "no people or a very low population".

Where is Moreton Bay?

Moreton Bay is a huge area! It covers a big part of the bay, including many islands. It's like a giant watery neighborhood.

Moreton Bay in Brisbane

A large part of Moreton Bay falls within the City of Brisbane. This section stretches from the northern coast of Brighton down to the southern coast of Lota. It also reaches out to the northwestern parts of Moreton Island and North Stradbroke Island.

This part of Moreton Bay includes some cool, uninhabited islands. These islands are not home to people, but they are important parts of the bay's environment:

  • Mud Island (also called Bungumba)
  • St Helena Island (also called Noogoon)
  • Green Island (also called Milwarpa)

Moreton Bay in Redland

Another big part of Moreton Bay is located within the City of Redland. This area goes from the northern coast of Thorneside down to the southern coast of Redland Bay. It also extends to the northwestern and southwestern parts of North Stradbroke Island.

Just like the Brisbane section, the Redland part of Moreton Bay has many uninhabited islands. These include:

  • Goat Island
  • Cassim Island
  • Snipe Island
  • Garden Island
  • Pannikin Island
  • Long Island
  • Lagoon Island
  • Redbill Island

Islands Not Included

It's important to know that some islands within the larger Moreton Bay area are not part of the Moreton Bay locality. These islands are considered separate places, and many of them have people living on them. They include:

How Moreton Bay Got Its Name

The name Moreton Bay comes from the large bay itself. This bay was named a long time ago by a famous explorer, Lieutenant James Cook. He was the commander of a ship called HMS Endeavour.

Cook named the bay after James Douglas, 14th Earl of Morton. He was a very important person who helped Cook's expedition get money. He was the President of the Royal Society, a group that supports science.

Who Lives in Moreton Bay?

As mentioned, the Moreton Bay locality is mostly water and uninhabited islands. This means very few, if any, people live directly within this specific area. Both the 2016 census and 2021 census showed that Moreton Bay had "no people or a very low population".
