Hinton is a small town in New South Wales, Australia. It is part of the Port Stephens area in the Hunter Region.

Hinton is mostly a countryside area. The main part of the town is right by the Paterson River. This is close to where the Paterson River meets the Hunter River.

The first European settlers arrived in Hinton in 1818. There were 12 of them, who were former convicts. Before 1835, the area was known as the "second arm of the Hunter River". In 1835, the post office asked for a proper name for the town, and "Hinton" was suggested.

Flooding in Hinton

Because Hinton is close to the Hunter and Paterson rivers and sits on low ground, the town can get cut off by floods. This happens when there is a lot of rain. The town was isolated by floodwaters in March 2000 and again in June 2007.

Hinton School of Arts Building

Work on the building started in 1868. The builder was J Coulton, and the architects were Bell and Franklin. The first stone was laid in February 1869. The building was finished and officially opened on September 25, 1869.

Hinton Baptist Church

The Hinton Baptist Church started as a Sunday School in a home in 1848. Later, it moved to a hall.

In August 1856, Reverend Phillip Lane became the first pastor. He was very skilled and helped build the church from an existing building. The church officially opened on July 16, 1857. It was the third Baptist church building to open in Australia.

The picture on the left shows Hinton from Brandy Hill during the floods in June 2007. The picture on the right was taken after the floodwaters went down.
