The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus are smartphones made by Apple Inc.. They are the sixteenth group of iPhones. These phones came after the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini.

Apple announced the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus on September 7, 2022. This happened at an Apple Event in Cupertino, California. The iPhone 14 has a 6.1-inch screen. The iPhone 14 Plus has a larger 6.7-inch screen. Both phones have better back cameras. They also have a special feature for emergencies. This feature lets you contact help using satellites. This works even if you don't have Wi-Fi or cell service.

The iPhone 14 was released on September 16, 2022. The iPhone 14 Plus came out on October 7, 2022. They cost $799 and $899 at first. Both phones launched with iOS 16. Pre-orders started on September 9, 2022. The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus are the last iPhones to use the Lightning charging port. Newer iPhones, like the iPhone 15, use a USB-C port. This change happened because of rules in Europe.

Unlike the iPhone 13, there is no "Mini" version of the iPhone 14. Instead, Apple brought back a bigger model called the iPhone 14 Plus. Apple had not made a "Plus" iPhone since the iPhone 8 Plus in 2017. In the United States, iPhone 14 models do not use physical SIM cards. They use an eSIM instead. This means you activate your phone service digitally. The iPhone 14 is currently the oldest iPhone model still sold and supported by Apple.

How the iPhone 14 Was Developed

People first thought the iPhone 14 would come in 6.1-inch and 5.4-inch sizes. But Apple did not release a smaller 5.4-inch model. This might be because the smaller iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 13 Mini did not sell very well. Instead, Apple added a bigger 6.7-inch option. This new, larger phone was named "iPhone 14 Plus." Some people thought it would be called "iPhone 14 Max."

Apple officially showed off the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus at an event called "Far Out." This event happened on September 7, 2022. Other new products were also announced. These included the iPhone 14 Pro, Apple Watch Series 8, and AirPods Pro (2nd generation).

You could start ordering the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus on September 9. The iPhone 14 was available in stores from September 16. The iPhone 14 Plus became available on October 7.

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus look almost the same as the iPhone 13. However, models sold in the US do not have a slot for a physical SIM card.

The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus come in six different colors:

  • Blue
  • Purple
  • Midnight (a very dark blue/black)
  • Starlight (a light cream/white)
  • Yellow
  • Product Red (a bright red)

Purple is a new color for this iPhone. It replaced the Pink color from the iPhone 13. The yellow color was added later, on March 7, 2023.

Inside the Phone

The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus come with different amounts of storage. You can choose from 128, 256, or 512 GB. Both models have 6 GB of RAM. This is more than the 4 GB in the iPhone 13. The phones are also resistant to dust and water. They have an IP68 rating. This means they can be in up to 6 meters of water for 30 minutes.

The Chip

The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus use a special chip called the A15 Bionic. This chip is made by Apple. It is the same chip used in the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max from the year before. The A15 chip has a 6-core CPU (the brain of the phone). It also has a 5-core GPU (for graphics). Plus, it has a 16-core Neural Engine for smart tasks.

The iPhone 14 was the first main iPhone model since 2008 to use the same chip as the previous year's Pro models. This might have been done to help keep costs down. Even though it's an older chip, it still performs very well.

The Screen

The iPhone 14 has a 6.1-inch screen. It uses Super Retina XDR OLED technology. The screen has a clear resolution of 2532 × 1170 pixels. This gives it about 460 PPI. The screen refreshes 60 times per second (60 Hz).

The iPhone 14 Plus has a larger 6.7-inch screen. It uses the same great screen technology. Its resolution is 2778 × 1284 pixels. This gives it about 458 PPI. Both screens can get very bright. They can reach 800 nits for normal use. For bright parts of videos, they can go up to 1200 nits.

Cameras

The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus have a great camera system. They have one front-facing camera and two cameras on the back.

  • The front camera is 12 megapixels (MP) with an f/1.9 lens. For the first time, this camera can autofocus.
  • On the back, there's a wide camera (12 MP, f/1.5) and an ultra-wide camera (12 MP, f/2.4). The wide and front cameras let in more light than the iPhone 13.

The cameras use Apple's newest photo technology called Smart HDR 4. You can also choose different "photographic styles." These styles are smarter than simple filters. They work with the image processing to make your photos look their best.

The camera app also has "Cinematic Mode." This lets you change the focus between different people or objects in your video. It also creates a soft, blurry background effect. This mode works in 4K quality at 30 frames per second.

A new "Action mode" helps make videos super stable. If you're running or moving a lot, this mode makes your video look smooth. It does this by using a smaller part of the camera's sensor.

Battery Life

The iPhone 14 has a slightly longer battery life than the iPhone 13. Apple says the iPhone 14 (3,279 mAh) can play videos for up to 20 hours. It can stream videos for 16 hours and play audio for 80 hours. The larger iPhone 14 Plus (4,325 mAh) has even longer battery life. It can play videos for up to 26 hours!

Software

The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus came with iOS 16 when they were first released. Later, with the iOS 17.2 update, they gained support for the newer Qi2 wireless charging standard. The latest version of iOS, iOS 18, was released on September 16, 2024. Both the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus can use this new software.

Emergency SOS via Satellite

One cool new feature is Emergency SOS via satellite. This service is for iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models. It lets you contact emergency services when you are somewhere without cell service or Wi-Fi.

When you use Emergency SOS via satellite, your message goes to a satellite. This satellite is run by a company called Globalstar. The satellite then sends your message to special ground stations. These stations are located around the world.

Globalstar has 25 satellites orbiting Earth. They plan to add more in the future. This service became available in the US and Canada in November 2022. It then came to the UK, Germany, Ireland, and France in December 2022. Australia and New Zealand got the service in May 2023.
