In Oregon, he helped make laws as part of the Oregon Territorial Legislature. He also helped create Oregon's constitution. His son, Isaac R. Moores, Jr., later became a leader in the Oregon government.

Isaac Moores' Early Life and Military Service

Isaac Moores was born in Madison County, Kentucky, on March 23, 1796. His father, Henry, was a soldier in the American Revolutionary War.

In 1814, Isaac joined the United States Army. He fought in the Seminole Wars. In 1818, he served under future President Andrew Jackson during these wars.

Family Life and Moving West

In 1818, Isaac Moores married Jane Alexander in Tennessee. They had five children together. The family lived in Alabama for a while. Then, they moved north to Danville, Illinois, in 1824.

Moores was friends with Sam Houston. Houston even tried to convince him to move to Texas.

Military Roles in Illinois

During the Black Hawk War in 1831, Moores became a colonel. He led the 4th regiment of the Illinois Volunteers. He also formed a group of soldiers for the Mexican–American War. However, they did not fight because Illinois had already sent enough soldiers.

Moving to Oregon and Political Career

In March 1852, Isaac Moores and his family left Illinois. They traveled the Oregon Trail in a large group of 70 wagons. They arrived in Portland in November 1852.

Colonel Moores then moved to the southern part of the Willamette Valley. He settled in Lane County. There, he bought a large farm.

Serving in Oregon's Government

In 1855, Moores was elected to represent Lane County. He served as a Democrat in the Oregon Territorial Legislature. This group made laws for the Oregon Territory.

In 1857, Moores was chosen as a delegate for the Oregon Constitutional Convention. This meeting was held in Salem. Its goal was to write a constitution for Oregon to become a state. Moores represented Lane County again and worked on the military affairs committee.

Later Years and Family Legacy

Isaac Moores was against slavery. Because of this, he joined the Republican Party when it was formed. In 1860, the Republican Party nominated him for the Oregon State Senate. However, he did not win that election.
