Ivinghoe is a lovely village in Buckinghamshire, England. It is part of a "civil parish," which is a local area with its own council. The village is close to the borders of Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire. You can find it about four miles north of Tring and six miles south of Leighton Buzzard. What's in a Name?
The name Ivinghoe comes from an old language called Old English. It means 'Ifa's hill-spur'. In a very old book from 1086, called the Domesday Book, the village was written as Evinghehou. Ivinghoe is also an important spot on the Icknield Way. This is a very old road in Britain, possibly the oldest, dating back many centuries.
A Look at History
The big church in Ivinghoe was first built in 1220. Sadly, it was set on fire in 1234. But don't worry, it was rebuilt just seven years later, in 1241!
Ivinghoe has something special for a village: a town hall. Most villages have a "village hall," but Ivinghoe's is called a town hall. The village also has some beautiful old buildings. Many of these show off Tudor architecture, especially around the village green.
Ivinghoe Beacon: A Hill with a Story
Near the village is Ivinghoe Beacon. This is an ancient signal point. In old times, people used beacons like this to send messages across the country. They would light a fire to warn others of danger. Today, it's a popular place for walkers. They go there to get exercise and enjoy the amazing views. It used to be a spot for flying model airplanes, but this is now not allowed due to safety reasons.
Ivinghoe Beacon is also home to an old Iron Age Hill fort. This fort was built between 800 and 700 BC. That's a very long time ago! Experts found old bronze items during digs in the 1960s. Like other hillforts in the Chiltern Hills, this one was probably used for only a short time. Maybe less than one generation lived there.
Close by, you can also find Pitstone Windmill. This old windmill is looked after by the National Trust. The National Trust helps protect special places in England.
Filming Location Fun
Ivinghoe has been a star on screen! Parts of famous movies have been filmed at Ivinghoe Beacon. These include "Quatermass 2," "Batman Begins," and "The Dirty Dozen." The village itself was once used for the children's TV show, ChuckleVision. Also, director Raymond Austin filmed parts of the 1970s TV shows "The Avengers," "New Avengers," and "The Saint" in and around Ivinghoe.
