Jack Lowden (born June 2, 1990) is a Scottish actor. He started his career acting on stage. His first big international success on screen was in the 2016 BBC miniseries War & Peace. This role helped him get many starring parts in movies and TV shows.
Jack Lowden played Eric Liddell in the 2012 play Chariots of Fire in London. In 2014, he won an Olivier Award for his role in the play Ghosts. Since 2013, he has had important roles in British TV shows and films. These include The Tunnel (2013) and '71 (2014). He also had main roles in the BBC shows The Passing Bells (2014) and War & Peace (2016).
After War & Peace, he starred as golf legend Tommy Morris in Tommy's Honour (2016). He also played Morrissey in England Is Mine (2017). Jack was an RAF fighter pilot in Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk (2017). He won an award for his role in the thriller Calibre (2018). He played Lord Darnley in Mary Queen of Scots (2018). More recently, he starred in the Apple TV series Slow Horses (2022), for which he received nominations for a Primetime Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award.

Early Life and Becoming an Actor
Jack Lowden was born in Chelmsford, Essex, England. He grew up in a small village in Scotland called Oxton. His younger brother, Calum, became a ballet dancer. Jack also took dance classes as a child. However, he found he was better at acting. He once said that he wanted to be a footballer when he was younger.
When Jack was 10, his parents enrolled him in the Scottish Youth Theatre in Edinburgh. At 12, he played John in a Peter Pan play. He went to Earlston High School, where he acted in school plays. He played Buddy Holly in a musical. Jack decided to become a professional actor after seeing the play Black Watch in 2007. He also studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London during summer. In 2011, he earned a degree in acting from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow.
Jack Lowden's Acting Career
Starting Out (2009–2011)
In 2009, when he was 18, Jack Lowden was in a TV advertisement for Irn-Bru. In 2010, he had a small part in the TV series Being Victor.
From 2010 to 2011, Lowden played the main character, Cammy, in the play Black Watch. This play was about Scottish soldiers serving in Iraq. Jack and the other actors trained hard to get into military shape for their roles. Critics praised his performance, calling him a "hugely promising young actor."
Big Roles on Stage and Screen (2012–2015)

From May 2012 to January 2013, Lowden starred as Scottish runner Eric Liddell in the play Chariots of Fire. This play was based on the famous film. It was created to celebrate the 2012 London Summer Olympics. Lowden's acting was highly praised by many reviewers.
On TV, he appeared in the drama Mrs Biggs in 2012. In 2013, he had an important role in the TV series The Tunnel. This was a crime drama made by British and French teams. He also played a young British soldier in the 2014 film '71. This movie was set in Belfast during a conflict in 1971.
In 2014, Jack Lowden won two major awards for his role in the play Ghosts. He won the Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actor. He also won the Ian Charleson Award. The play was shown in cinemas in the UK and Ireland.
In 2014, Screen Daily magazine named Lowden one of the "UK Stars of Tomorrow." He also performed in the play Electra in London in 2014. On TV, he starred in the 2014 BBC drama The Passing Bells. This show told the story of two young soldiers, one German and one British, during World War I.
Recent Successes (2016–Present)
In 2016, Lowden played Nikolai Rostov in the BBC miniseries War & Peace. This show was watched by many people around the world. It helped him become much more well-known.
In movies, he played the main character in Tommy's Honour (2016). This film was about the famous Scottish golfer Old Tom Morris and his son Tommy Morris, Jr.. Jack was nominated for an award for this role. He also had supporting roles in A United Kingdom (2016) and Denial (2016).
In 2017, he played a Royal Air Force fighter pilot in Christopher Nolan's World War II film Dunkirk. He also played Morrissey in the movie England Is Mine.
In 2018, he starred in the Scottish thriller Calibre. This movie was released globally on Netflix. Critics praised his acting, saying he showed "through-the-wringer commitment." He won the British Academy Scotland Award for Best Film Actor for this role.
On stage, he acted with Hayley Atwell in Shakespeare's Measure for Measure in London in 2018. They even switched roles during the play! On TV, he co-starred in The Long Song, a BBC show about a slave on a sugar plantation in Jamaica.
He played Lord Darnley in Mary Queen of Scots (2018). He also played Zak "Zodiac" Bevis in the 2019 comedy-drama film Fighting with My Family. In 2020, he appeared as an FBI agent in the movie Capone.
In 2019, Jack Lowden started his own film production company called Reiver Pictures. This company made the movie Kindred, in which he also starred. He played Siegfried Sassoon in the 2022 movie Benediction.
Since 2022, Lowden has starred in the Apple TV series Slow Horses. He has been nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award for his work on this show. He is also set to appear in the upcoming film Rogue Trooper.
Personal Life
From 2019 to 2021, Jack Lowden lived in Leith, Edinburgh. He then moved back to the Scottish Borders. He supports Scottish independence.
Since 2018, he has been in a relationship with Irish actress Saoirse Ronan. They starred together in Mary Queen of Scots. In July 2024, it was reported that they got married in Edinburgh.
