James Reed (born around 1724, died 1807) was an important military leader. He fought in two major wars: the French and Indian War and the American Revolution. During the American Revolution, he became a high-ranking officer, reaching the rank of brigadier general.

Early Life and Family

James Reed was born in Massachusetts, either in Lunenburg or Woburn, Massachusetts. Around 1742, he married Abigail Hinds. Abigail was born in Brookfield, Massachusetts.

James Reed also played a role in starting new communities. He was one of the first people to own land in what is now Fitzwilliam, New Hampshire.

Military Service

French and Indian War

James Reed served as an officer during the French and Indian War. This war was fought between Great Britain (and its American colonies) and France (and its Native American allies). Reed became a lieutenant colonel in Colonel Brown's Massachusetts Regiment. He was involved in battles at Fort Ticonderoga in both 1758 and 1759.

American Revolution

When the American Revolution began with the Battles of Lexington and Concord, James Reed quickly took action. He gathered local militia members and led them to Boston.

He was made a Colonel and commanded the 3rd New Hampshire Regiment. His regiment fought alongside John Stark's 1st New Hampshire Regiment at the famous Battle of Bunker Hill. This was one of the earliest and most important battles of the Revolution.

Campaign in Canada

In April 1776, James Reed's regiment was sent to help with the invasion of Canada. They marched north under General John Sullivan.

However, James Reed only made it to Fort Saint-Jean in Quebec. There, he became very sick with smallpox. Even after he seemed to recover, he fell ill again during the army's retreat from Canada.

He arrived at Crown Point on Lake Champlain and suffered from a serious fever. This illness caused him to lose his eyesight. Because of his failing health, James Reed had to leave the military at the end of 1776.

He was promoted to brigadier general in the Continental Army. However, he was never able to serve at this higher rank due to his poor health.

Later Life and Legacy

In 1784, James Reed became an original member of The Society of the Cincinnati in New Hampshire. This society was formed by officers who had served in the Continental Army during the American Revolution.

James Reed lived to be 83 years old. He passed away in 1807 in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, where he was also buried. Today, there is a New Hampshire historical marker (number 99) dedicated to him. It is located along New Hampshire Route 119 in the town square of Fitzwilliam, New Hampshire.
