Jason Scotland's Football Journey
Early Days and First Clubs
Jason Scotland was born in Morvant, Trinidad and Tobago. He started his football career playing for his school team. After school, he joined San Juan Jabloteh, where he scored nine goals in nine league games. Then he moved to Defence Force, scoring an impressive 30 goals in 31 league matches.
His amazing goal-scoring skills caught the eye of Dundee United, a Scottish club. In May 2003, he went for a trial with them. He did so well that he joined the team in July after getting a special work permit.
Playing for Dundee United
Jason made his debut for Dundee United in August 2003. In his first season, he often came on as a substitute. He scored his first goal for the club in March 2004, helping his team win 3–2 against Livingston. Just four days later, he scored the only goal in a 1–0 win against Motherwell. He ended that season with five goals from 21 games and earned a new contract.
In his second season, Jason scored a very important goal in April. It was the winning goal in the Scottish Cup semi-final, which sent Dundee United to the final. He played the whole final game, but his team lost 1–0 to Celtic.
Time at St Johnstone
In July 2005, Jason faced a challenge with his work permit. But St Johnstone, another Scottish club, managed to get him one. He joined them and scored 15 goals in 31 league games in his first season. This included a goal on his debut and a hat-trick in April.
He was chosen to be part of Trinidad and Tobago's squad for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. In his second season with St Johnstone, he scored 18 league goals. He even scored against his old club, Dundee United, in a League Cup match. By April 2007, he was named one of the best players in the Scottish Division One 'Team of the Year'. He scored 33 goals in 66 league games for St Johnstone, which is an average of one goal every two games.
Moving to Swansea City
In May 2007, Jason signed with Swansea City for £25,000. He scored on his first game for them. He helped Swansea City get promoted to the Football League Championship. He was the top scorer in the division with 29 goals that season. He also earned a spot in the PFA Team of the Year.
On March 10, 2009, he scored his 50th goal for Swansea in all competitions. It was a penalty kick against Plymouth Argyle.
Playing for Wigan Athletic
Jason joined Wigan Athletic on July 18, 2009. He signed a three-year contract. He made his first appearance for Wigan as a stoppage time substitute in a 2–0 win against Aston Villa. Time at Ipswich Town
On August 23, 2010, Jason signed with Ipswich Town. He made his debut in the League Cup and scored his first goal for the club in his league debut against Bristol City. In April 2012, his manager, Paul Jewell, praised him for turning down a pay raise that was in his contract.
He left Ipswich Town on January 21, 2013. Some fans were sad to see him go because he had become a popular player, often coming on as an impact substitute.
Joining Barnsley
On January 28, 2013, Jason signed with Barnsley, another Championship team. He made his first appearance for Barnsley as a substitute and scored the second goal in a 2–0 win against Millwall, just minutes after coming on.
On May 4, 2013, he scored Barnsley's second goal in a 2–2 draw against Huddersfield Town. This goal helped Barnsley stay in the Championship for another season.
Return to Hamilton Academical
On January 22, 2014, Jason joined Hamilton Academical on a free transfer. He scored a goal against Hibernian in a play-off game on May 25. He also scored in the penalty shootout that followed, helping Hamilton win promotion to the Scottish Premiership.
He was released by Hamilton in January 2015 but re-signed later that month until the end of the season. He left Hamilton again after the 2014–15 season.
