Early Life and First Band
John Martin Lindström was born in Stockholm, Sweden, on August 22, 1980. His father was a rally car driver, but John chose a path in music instead of racing.
When he was a teenager, his older brother introduced him to grunge music from the rock scene in Seattle. At age 13, he got his first electric guitar and started a rock band with his friends. At first, they played songs by the famous band Nirvana. Later, they began writing their own music and performing at local events.
Career as a Singer
Working with Swedish House Mafia
John Martin's career took off when he met songwriter Michel Zitron. Together, they worked with the famous DJ group Swedish House Mafia to write the song "Save the World". Released in 2011, the song was a huge success. It reached the top ten in the United Kingdom and number one on the American dance music chart. It was even nominated for a Grammy Award.
The next year, Martin and Swedish House Mafia released another massive hit, "Don't You Worry Child". The song was so popular it reached the top ten on the main US Billboard chart. This was a big achievement for a Swedish band. "Don't You Worry Child" also received a Grammy nomination.
Thanks to these songs, John Martin became a well-known voice in electronic dance music. He toured the world with Swedish House Mafia, performing in huge venues like Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Other Famous Collaborations
In 2013, John Martin sang on the song "Children of the Sun" with rapper Tinie Tempah. He also provided vocals for the track "Reload" by Sebastian Ingrosso and Tommy Trash.
Over the years, he has worked with many other famous DJs. In 2020, he teamed up with Martin Garrix for the song "Higher Ground". He has also released songs with David Guetta, ALOK, and Steve Aoki.
Solo Music
In 2014, John Martin decided to focus on his own music. He signed a record deal with Island Records, the same label that has worked with stars like Bob Marley and U2.
He wanted people to know him not just as a voice on other artists' songs, but as his own artist. He released the single "Anywhere for You", which became a hit in Sweden and on the UK dance charts.
Songwriting Career
Besides singing, John Martin is also a talented songwriter. He has written songs for many famous artists.
Some of the musicians he has written for include Avicii ("Fade into Darkness"), Alesso ("In My Blood"), and Martin Garrix ("Home" and "Hold On"). He has also written for singers and bands like Julian Lennon, Bob Moses, and New Hope Club.
