Jonathan Phillip Ogden (born July 31, 1974) is a famous former football player. He played as an offensive tackle for the Baltimore Ravens in the National Football League (NFL). Ogden spent his entire professional career with the Ravens.

He played college football for the UCLA Bruins. There, he was recognized as a unanimous All-American. The Ravens chose him as the 4th overall pick in the 1996 NFL draft. This made him the very first player ever drafted by the Ravens team.

Jonathan Ogden was chosen for the Pro Bowl 11 times. He was also named an All-Pro nine times. In 2001, he helped the Ravens win Super Bowl XXXV. In 2013, Ogden was voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He was the first player to spend his whole career as a Raven and be inducted. He was also inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2012.

Early Life and High School Sports

Jonathan Ogden was born in Washington, D.C.. He went to St. Albans School in Washington. At school, he was excellent in both high school football and track and field.

He was named a high school All-American in both sports. He threw the shot put over 63 feet (19.23 meters). He also threw the discus throw over 186 feet (56.73 meters).

College Football and Track Success

Ogden chose to attend the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He picked UCLA over the University of Florida. This was because UCLA's coaches would let him play football and compete in track and field.

As a sophomore, he helped UCLA win the 1993 Pac-10 Championship. They also played in the Rose Bowl. In 1996, he won the NCAA Men's Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships in the shot put. His best throw was 19.42 meters.

Ogden had an amazing football career with the UCLA Bruins. He started as a left tackle for four years. In his junior and senior years, he only allowed two sacks in 23 games. In 1995, he won the Outland Trophy and the Morris Trophy. He was also named the UPI Lineman of the Year. He was a unanimous All-American that year.

UCLA honored Ogden by retiring his jersey number 79. He was only the eighth player in the school's history to receive this honor. In 2006, he was inducted into the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame. He was also enshrined into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2012.

Playing in the NFL

The Baltimore Ravens selected Jonathan Ogden in the first round of the 1996 NFL draft. He was the fourth overall pick. This was the very first player the Ravens ever drafted!

Ogden became a four-time first-team All-Pro. He was also an 11-time Pro Bowler at left tackle. He went to Hawaii for the Pro Bowl every year except his first season. During his career, Ogden caught two passes. Both were for one yard, and both were for touchdowns! He also recovered 10 fumbles and made 10 tackles.

Ogden was known for always smiling. Former New York Giants player Michael Strahan joked, "You see him, you think to yourself this guy is not mean enough to handle the mean guys out there in the NFL. Jonathan would rip your limbs off, and he'd smile...and wave your arm in front of you." Many people think he is one of the best offensive tackles ever to play the game.

In 2001, Ogden won a Super Bowl ring with the Ravens. They beat the New York Giants 34–7 in Super Bowl XXXV. Ogden announced his retirement on June 12, 2008. He played for 12 seasons, all with Baltimore. At 6 feet 9 inches tall, Ogden was one of the tallest players in the NFL when he retired.

Ogden was the Ravens' honorary captain at Super Bowl XLVII. His former team won their second world championship at that game.

Jonathan Ogden's Foundation

In 1997, Jonathan Ogden started the Jonathan Ogden Foundation. This foundation helps student-athletes. It teaches them to be responsible for their futures. They learn important lessons from playing sports, studying in school, and being part of their local communities.
