Keith Ramon Bogans, born on May 12, 1980, is an American former professional basketball player. He used to be an assistant coach for the New York Knicks in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Before playing professionally, he was a star player for the Kentucky Wildcats in college.

Early Life and College Basketball Journey

Keith Bogans went to The Langley School and DeMatha Catholic High School. In his final year of high school, he was named an All-American first team player. His team, coached by Morgan Wootten, had an amazing 34–1 record in 1999. They were ranked third nationally.

Playing for the Kentucky Wildcats

After high school, Keith was recruited by the University of Kentucky. He was a starting player for the Kentucky Wildcats for all four years. His coach there was Tubby Smith. In his senior year (2002–03), he helped lead the Wildcats to a perfect 16–0 record in the Southeastern Conference. They also won the SEC Tournament title.

The team then made it to the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament. Keith was an All-American that year. He averaged 15.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.2 steals per game. He also made 80 three-point shots. His college career ended when he had to leave a game due to a sprained ankle. The Wildcats lost to Dwyane Wade's Marquette team in that Elite Eight game.

In 2014, Keith Bogans was honored by being added to the University of Kentucky Athletics Hall of Fame.

Keith Bogans' Professional NBA Career

Keith Bogans was chosen by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2003 NBA draft. He was the 43rd pick in the second round. However, on the same day, he was traded to the Orlando Magic.

Starting with the Orlando Magic

In his first year with the Magic, Keith started in half of the games he played. He averaged 6.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game.

Time with the Charlotte Bobcats

In 2004, the Magic traded Keith to the Charlotte Bobcats. He continued to improve his game with the Bobcats during the 2004–05 season. He started in 42 of his 76 games and averaged 9.6 points per game.

Short Stint with the Houston Rockets

In 2006, Keith was traded to the Houston Rockets. He joined former college teammates Chuck Hayes and Gerald Fitch there.

Returning to the Orlando Magic

Keith signed with the Orlando Magic again in July 2006 as a free agent. In November 2008, he broke his thumb during a game against the Houston Rockets. He was expected to miss several weeks. However, he recovered quickly and returned to play just two days after his cast was removed.

Playing for the Milwaukee Bucks

In February 2009, Keith was traded back to the Milwaukee Bucks, the team that first drafted him. He played 29 games for the Bucks, averaging 6.0 points per game, before moving on.

Joining the San Antonio Spurs

Keith signed with the San Antonio Spurs in September 2009. During the 2009–10 season, he scored a season-high 17 points against the Minnesota Timberwolves. He played one season with the Spurs, appearing in 79 games and starting in 50 of them.

Key Role with the Chicago Bulls

Keith signed with the Chicago Bulls in August 2010. For the 2010–11 season, he was a starter for the Bulls. He averaged 4.4 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 1.2 assists in 82 games. Even though his scoring numbers were not very high for a starter, his coach, Tom Thibodeau, praised his strong defense. Coach Thibodeau said Keith would "make you work" when guarding you.

Keith himself explained that his main role wasn't to score a lot. He was on the court with high-scoring players like Luol Deng, Derrick Rose, and Carlos Boozer. He knew there wouldn't be many shots for him. In March 2011, Keith scored a season-high 17 points in a win against the Washington Wizards. This win helped the Bulls secure the top spot in the Eastern Conference.

He also scored 15 points in a playoff game against the Indiana Pacers, helping the Bulls advance to the next round. The Bulls made it to the Eastern Conference Finals but lost to the Miami Heat. Keith played and started in all of the Bulls' playoff games that year. In December 2011, the Bulls decided to waive Keith, meaning they released him from his contract.

In February 2012, Keith signed with the New Jersey Nets. He got injured shortly after, tearing a ligament in his hand. He was waived by the team after playing only five games. However, he re-signed with the Nets in July 2012 for the 2012–13 season. That season, Keith played in 74 games, starting in 23 of them, and averaged 4.2 points per game.

Final NBA Team: Boston Celtics

In July 2013, Keith Bogans was traded to the Boston Celtics. This was part of a big trade that sent Celtics stars Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Jason Terry to the Nets. Keith's last NBA game was in January 2014, where he scored 9 points. He was excused from the team shortly after for personal reasons.

Later Career and Coaching

In 2014, Keith was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers and then to the Philadelphia 76ers, but he was waived by the 76ers before playing any games for them. In 2015, he joined the Portland Trail Blazers for the NBA Summer League. At 35 years old, he was the oldest player there. In 2016, Keith played for the Westchester Knicks in the NBA Development League.

Coaching Career Highlights

In October 2017, Keith Bogans was hired as an assistant coach for the Westchester Knicks. In December 2019, he was promoted to an assistant coach for the New York Knicks. In September 2022, he was hired by the Detroit Pistons as a player-development assistant coach.
