Kholo's Location

A Look Back at Kholo's History
The Kholo Bridge Opening
A very important event in Kholo's history was the opening of the Kholo Bridge. This bridge crosses the Brisbane River and connects Kholo to a place called Chuwar. It officially opened on June 23, 1876.
On the day it opened, there had been a lot of rain. The river was so full that the new bridge was actually under about 3 feet of water! Even with the flood, a group of brave people wanted to be the first to cross. They pulled a buggy with a "courageous lady" across the submerged bridge. This lady then broke a bottle against a bridge post and officially named it the Kholo Bridge. After this exciting start, everyone enjoyed a special meal together.
Early Schools in Kholo
Around January 1, 1877, a school called Kholo Provisional School opened. At first, it was in a barn, which wasn't a very good spot. By 1878, local families were asking for a more permanent state school.
However, the school had some challenges. In 1883, reports said that students' attendance was "most irregular." In July 1884, only about 16 out of 30 enrolled students were regularly attending. The school eventually closed around December 1, 1884. Even though residents asked for a new state school in 1886, no more schools were built in the area.
There was also a mention of a provisional school in Lower Kholo, which is now Mount Crosby. This sometimes caused the Kholo Provisional School to be called "Upper Kholo Provisional School."
Kholo Joins Brisbane
For a long time, Kholo, along with Mount Crosby and Karana Downs, was part of the City of Ipswich. But in the year 2000, these areas were moved and became part of the City of Brisbane.
