Laura Bambrough (April 28, 1964 – March 17, 2014), known as L'Wren Scott, was an American model, fashion designer, and stylist.

L'Wren Scott began her career as a model in Paris. Later, she moved to California and became a stylist for famous movie stars like Madonna and Julia Roberts. In 2006, she launched her first fashion collection. Her designs were known for being feminine and stylish. She also shared fashion and etiquette tips, called "L'Wrenisms." Over time, she expanded her brand to include shoes, handbags, glasses, makeup, and perfume. In 2013, she worked with Banana Republic to create a more affordable clothing line for the holidays. Scott had a long relationship with Mick Jagger, the lead singer of The Rolling Stones.

Early Life and Education

L'Wren Scott was born Laura Bambrough. She was adopted by Ivan and Lula Bambrough, who were Mormon. They raised her in Roy, Utah, along with her two adopted siblings, Jan and Randall. Laura was often called "Luann" by her family.

She was very tall from a young age. By age twelve, she was already 6 feet (1.83 meters) tall. She eventually grew to be 6 feet 3 inches (1.91 meters). Because of her height, she often had to sew her own clothes. This is how she learned about clothing design and fabric quality from a young age. Luann Bambrough finished high school at Roy High School in 1982.

Career Journey

L'Wren Scott's career developed from being a model to a stylist, and then a fashion designer. There are two stories about how she started her career.

One story says that when she was 16, photographer Bruce Weber saw her during a photo shoot in Utah. He told her she should go to Paris. About a year later, she reportedly flew to Europe with a one-way ticket. She told her parents she was going to New York.

The second story says that Scott moved to Los Angeles about a year and a half after high school. There, a scout with connections to agencies in Paris discovered her. It was around this time that she started calling herself "L'Wren."

As a model in Paris, she worked with agencies like Glamour and Marilyn Gauthier. She modeled for famous designers like Thierry Mugler and Chanel. She also worked with well-known photographers such as Helmut Newton, Guy Bourdin, David Bailey, and Jean-Paul Goude. One of her first big successes was modeling the legs on a clock for Pretty Polly hosiery ads. These photos were taken by David Bailey.

Becoming a Stylist

In the early 1990s, Scott moved to California. She became a successful stylist, first working with photographer Herb Ritts. Later, she collaborated with Helmut Newton, Karl Lagerfeld, and Mario Sorrenti. One of her first styling jobs was for an ad campaign for Elizabeth Taylor's White Diamonds perfume. This perfume later became the world's best-selling celebrity fragrance.

In 2009, she designed clothes for Madonna's photo shoot with model Jesus Luz for W Magazine. In 2011, Scott styled actress Julia Roberts for another W Magazine shoot, which also featured Tom Hanks. She also designed costumes for several movies. These included Diabolique (a 1996 remake), Ocean's Thirteen, and Eyes Wide Shut. She also designed costumes for Shine a Light, a documentary about The Rolling Stones by Martin Scorsese. She had been in a relationship with Mick Jagger since 2001.

L'Wren Scott once told Vogue magazine in 2009, "I trusted my instincts and stuck to what I believed in." She designed many different items, including clothing, makeup, perfume, handbags, shoes, and eyeglasses.

Scott was known for paying close attention to details in her designs. Her style was often called "luxury dressing." She was a very involved designer. She would find materials, cut patterns, sew, and fit many of the clothes herself.

"L'Wrenisms"

As a designer, L'Wren Scott created what her fans called "L'Wrenisms." These were her unique style tips. The Sunday Times described them as a fun mix of opinions and helpful advice. Some of her "L'Wrenisms" included:

  • Spraying perfume on the back of your hand instead of your wrist, because it looked more elegant.
  • Avoiding eating with a plastic fork.
  • Trying not to drink directly from a bottle if possible.
  • Believing that a well-designed garment should fit perfectly without needing bras or Spanx.

Design Inspiration

In an interview with Harriet Mays Powell of New York, Scott explained her design process. She would start by choosing colors, then design the fabrics, and finally create the clothes. She found her inspiration in nature and the things around her. For example, her Madame DuBarry collection (Spring-Summer 2011) and her Banana Republic collection, which featured peony shirts, scarves, and pants, showed her nature-based inspiration.

Collaborations and Collections

In 2006, L'Wren Scott launched her first collection, called "Little Black Dress." This collection featured various black dresses, including her famous "Headmistress" dress, which was worn by Madonna.

Scott's designs were often seen on the red carpet at events. Many famous actresses wore her dresses to the Academy Awards. These included Sarah Jessica Parker, Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, Penélope Cruz, and Amy Adams.

First Lady Michelle Obama also liked L'Wren Scott's designs, especially her decorated cardigan sweaters. The former First Lady of France, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, wore Scott's designs. Other celebrities who wore her clothes included Naomi Campbell, Marion Cotillard, Reese Witherspoon, Christina Hendricks, Jennifer Lopez, Sandra Bullock, and Uma Thurman.

In 2010, Scott worked with Lancôme to create a special makeup collection for the holidays. It included a lipstick in Scott's favorite deep red color. The advertising campaign for this collection was photographed by Mario Testino and featured model Daria Werbowy wearing an outfit designed by Scott.

In May 2011, Scott launched her first collection of handbags. She named the line "Lula" after her mother. The collection was introduced at Barneys New York, and Scott made a personal appearance there.

In 2012, L'Wren Scott launched her own perfume, which was sold only at Barney's. The same year, she also launched an eyewear (glasses) line. This collection was introduced at Vision Expo East and was a partnership with the German company Menrad Group.

L'Wren Scott's collections included:

  • 2008: Purple Haze (Fall-Winter), and Dragonfly Blues (Spring-Summer)
  • 2009: Bois de Boulonge (Fall-Winter) and Zephyr (Spring-Summer)
  • 2010: Tuxedo Terrace (Fall-Winter), and Madame du Barry (Spring-Summer)

  • 2014: Tagasode (Spring-Summer)

In February 2014, the showing of her Fall 2014 collection at London Fashion Week was canceled. This was due to delays in production. It was announced that the collection would be shown through social media and presented to editors and buyers in her Paris showroom in March.

In 2013, Scott worked with Banana Republic to create a special holiday collection. It included clothing and accessories for women. This was her first time designing an affordable line of ready-to-wear clothing. The collection featured items like scarves, jeans, purses, sweaters, pajamas, and cocktail dresses. It launched on December 5, with a party attended by celebrities wearing the new clothes.

She also collaborated with makeup artist and brand Bobbi Brown to create lip glosses, eye shadows, and cheek colors, which came out in 2014. In 2013, she designed a special limited edition bottle for Caudalie's Beauty Elixir.

Working with The Rolling Stones

L'Wren Scott also worked with Mick Jagger to design his costumes for The Rolling Stones' tours. These costumes included a gorilla coat covered in ostrich feathers, a green jacket she called "Glamouflage," a black jacket with butterflies, and an embroidered gold jacket inspired by artist Gustav Klimt.

Personal Life

L'Wren Scott was married twice for short periods. From 1990 to 1993, she was married to British property developer Andrew Ladsky. In 1993, a month after her divorce from Ladsky, she married Anthony Brand, who managed a Prada store in Beverly Hills. This marriage lasted about a year, and their divorce was finalized in 1997.

Her longest relationship was with Mick Jagger, the lead singer of The Rolling Stones. They met around 2001. The couple lived in different places, including London, New York City, France, and Mustique.

Death and Legacy

L'Wren Scott passed away on March 17, 2014, at her apartment in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. She was 49 years old. Police reported that no note was found, and there were no signs of foul play.

A memorial service was held in Utah on April 12, 2014, led by her brother Randall Bambrough. He asked people to remember Scott as "a wonderful terrific person who was highly talented and had a very large heart and brought the best out in people." L'Wren Scott's ashes were buried next to her parents, Ivan and Lula Bambrough, near their family home in Ogden, Utah. A final memorial for her friends was held on May 2, 2014, in New York City, led by Mick Jagger and Randall Bambrough.

In January 2015, Mick Jagger announced that he had created a three-year scholarship fund in L'Wren Scott's name. This scholarship helps fashion design students at the Central Saint Martins school in London. The scholarship, which started in October 2015, covers all fees for one student each year for three years (until 2017).

In the weeks after her death, both her Banana Republic collection and her more expensive line at Barneys New York quickly sold out. She left all her belongings, valued at about US$9 million, to Mick Jagger. Christie's organized a sale of L'Wren's clothes designed for Mick Jagger in June-July 2021. The money raised, over £365,000, went to the scholarship fund that Mick Jagger created.
