The La Chaux-de-Fonds District used to be one of six districts in the canton of Neuchâtel, Switzerland. It stopped being a district on January 1, 2018. The main town, or capital, of this district was La Chaux-de-Fonds. In 2017, about 39,796 people lived there.

Languages Spoken

Most people in the district spoke French as their main language. About 85.8% of the population spoke French in 2000. The next most common languages were Italian (3.5%) and Portuguese (3.1%). A smaller number of people spoke German or Romansh.

The Swiss People's Party (SVP) was next with 25.93%. The PdA Party and the Green Party also received many votes. Overall, about 47.3% of eligible voters participated in this election.

Religion in the District

According to the 2000 census, many different religions were practiced in La Chaux-de-Fonds. About 30.2% of the people were Roman Catholic. Another 28.6% belonged to the Swiss Reformed Church. There were also smaller groups of Orthodox Christians, Christian Catholics, and other Christian churches. Some people were Jewish (0.35%) or Islamic (3.59%). There were also people who followed Buddhism, Hinduism, or other faiths. About 26.85% of the population said they did not belong to any church, or were agnostic or atheist.

Education System

Education is important in La Chaux-de-Fonds. About 33.4% of the people had finished high school (called "upper secondary education" in Switzerland). Also, 10.6% had gone on to higher education, like a university or a specialized college.

In the canton of Neuchâtel, where this district was located, most towns offer two years of optional kindergarten. After that, children attend five years of mandatory primary school. Then, they go to secondary school for four more years. Many students travel to larger schools for their secondary education.
