Early Life and First Steps
Lauren Hutton was born Mary Laurence Hutton on November 17, 1943, in Charleston, South Carolina. Her father was away in England during World War II when she was born. After the war, her parents divorced in 1945.
Lauren moved with her mother to Miami and then to Tampa, Florida. She spent most of her childhood in Tampa. She never met her father, which she later said was very painful for her. He passed away when she was 12 years old.
After her mother remarried, Lauren used the last name "Hall." She finished high school in Tampa in 1961. She was also one of the first students to attend the University of South Florida. Later, she moved to New York City and worked as a waitress. She even appeared on a TV show called "To Tell The Truth" in 1963. She then moved to New Orleans and studied at Newcomb College, which was part of Tulane University, graduating in 1964.
Becoming a Star: Modeling and Acting
Starting Her Career and the Revlon Deal (1964–2007)
In the mid-1960s, Lauren Hutton returned to New York. She changed her name to "Lauren Hutton" and began her modeling journey. At first, agents told her to hide the gap in her teeth. She tried different ways to cover it, but she often lost the covers! Eventually, she decided to keep her unique smile. Many people now say this "imperfection" made her stand out and seem more real.
In 1973, Lauren Hutton made history by signing a huge contract with Revlon cosmetics. This deal was worth $250,000 a year for just 20 days of work! It was the biggest modeling contract ever at that time. This partnership lasted for 10 years. Later, she signed another contract with Revlon to promote their skincare products.
Her Revlon contract helped her become a famous "cover girl." She appeared on the front cover of Vogue magazine a record 26 times! She also appeared in commercials for Pepsi Light in 1982. In the 1990s, she modeled for Barneys New York and walked the runway for designer Calvin Klein. In 1997, she became a brand ambassador for the Australian store David Jones.
In 1999, Vogue magazine featured her on their Millennium cover as one of the "Modern Muses." After a motorcycle accident in 2000, she launched her own makeup line called "Lauren Hutton's Good Stuff." These products were made for older women and sold in the USA, Europe, and South America.
Runway Shows and Campaigns (2008–2021)
In 2008, Lauren Hutton worked with famous designers Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen for their clothing line, The Row. She also inspired a fashion collection for the brand Mango and appeared in ads for Lord & Taylor.

In October 2000, Lauren Hutton was part of a motorcycle group ride that included actors Dennis Hopper and Laurence Fishburne. While riding near Hoover Dam, she had an accident. She suffered several injuries, including broken bones and a punctured lung. Luckily, she recovered.
