Leah Peak is a tall mountain, about 2,801-metre (9,190 ft) high. You can find it on the eastern side of Maligne Lake in Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada. It's part of the amazing Canadian Rockies mountain range. The mountain closest to it, and a bit taller, is Samson Peak, which is about 1.72 km (1.07 mi) away to the north.

Mountain's Story

How Leah Peak Got Its Name

Leah Peak was named by an explorer named Mary Schäffer Warren. In 1908, she went on a trip to find Maligne Lake. During her journey, she also named the nearby Samson Peak.

Mary became friends with a Stoney Indian man named Samson Beaver. Samson was very helpful. He drew Mary a map from memory to help her find the lake. He had visited the lake with his father when he was just 14 years old. Sixteen years later, he drew the map for Mary when they met.

Leah Beaver was Samson Beaver's wife. Mary Schäffer named Leah Peak after her.

First Climbers and Official Name

The very first time someone successfully climbed Leah Peak was in 1926. Two climbers, R. Ecaubert and J. Weber, made this "first ascent."

The mountain's name, Leah Peak, became official much later. This happened in 1956, thanks to the Geographical Names Board of Canada.

Weather Around Leah Peak

Mountain Climate Explained

Leah Peak is in a place with a subarctic climate. This means the winters are very cold and snowy. Summers are usually mild, not too hot.

Temperatures can drop really low, sometimes below −20 °C (which is −4 °F). With the wind, it can feel even colder, sometimes below −30 °C (−22 °F)!

Water Flow

When it rains or snows on Leah Peak, the water flows down the mountain. This water goes into Maligne Lake. From Maligne Lake, it then flows into the Maligne River. The Maligne River is a smaller river that eventually joins the larger Athabasca River.
