Ledyard is a small town located in Cayuga County, New York, in the United States. In 2020, about 1,654 people lived there. The town was named after General Benjamin Ledyard, a hero from the Revolutionary War who was one of the first people to settle in the area. Ledyard is on the western side of Cayuga County, southwest of the city of Auburn. The main community in Ledyard is the Village of Aurora.

Wells College was started in 1868 in the Village of Aurora. It was originally a college for women. Sadly, the college announced it would close permanently in 2024.

History of Ledyard

The southern part of Ledyard was once part of the Central New York Military Tract, which was land given to soldiers after the Revolutionary War. The northern part was a special area set aside for the Cayuga tribe, a Native American group.

The first settlers arrived in Ledyard around 1789. At that time, Ledyard was part of a larger town called Scipio. In 1823, Ledyard became its own separate town when the original town of Scipio was divided.

A historic building called the North Street Friends Meetinghouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. This means it's an important place to protect because of its history.

Famous Person from Ledyard

Henry Wells, who helped start two very famous companies, Wells Fargo and American Express, was from Aurora, a village within Ledyard.

Geography of Ledyard

Ledyard covers a total area of about 125.6 square kilometers (or 48.58 square miles). Most of this area is land, about 93.5 square kilometers (36.11 square miles). The rest, about 32.3 square kilometers (12.47 square miles), is water.

The town is located on the eastern shore of Cayuga Lake, which is one of the beautiful Finger Lakes in New York. The western border of Ledyard is also the border of Seneca County.

Two main highways, New York State Route 34B and New York State Route 90, run through Ledyard from north to south.
