Leixões Sport Club, often called Leixões, is a sports club from Matosinhos, Portugal. It's famous for its professional football team. But it also has many other sports sections. These include athletics, boxing, futsal, handball, karate, swimming, volleyball, water polo, and billiards.

Leixões won the Taça de Portugal (Portuguese Cup) in the 1960–61 season.

Club History

Leixões Sport Club was started in 1907. This makes it one of Portugal's oldest sports clubs that has been running non-stop.

Winning the Cup

In 1961, the club won its only Taça de Portugal. They beat Porto 2–0 in the final match. This big win meant Leixões got to play in the 1961–62 European Cup Winners' Cup. They did very well, reaching the quarter-finals. They were eventually knocked out by a team from East Germany, Motor Jena.

Best League Finish

Leixões had their best ever league performance in the 1962–63 season. They finished fifth in the top league. This was a great achievement for the club.

Ups and Downs in Leagues

Leixões played in Portugal's top football league for many years, starting in 1959–60. They were moved down to a lower league in 1977. For a long time, they didn't play in the top league again, except for one season in 1988–89.

In 2002, Leixões made history in the Taça de Portugal. They were a third-division club but reached the final! They played against Sporting CP and lost 1–0. Even though they lost, they still got to play in the UEFA Cup and the Portuguese Supercup the next season. This was because Sporting CP had also won the national championship.

The next year, Leixões lost the Supercup to Sporting CP. They also played in the UEFA Cup but lost to a Greek team, PAOK. That same season, Leixões won the Segunda Divisão B title with a lot of points. This meant they moved up to the Segunda Liga, a higher division.

In 2007, after 18 years, Leixões finally got promoted back to the top league, the Primeira Liga. They stayed there for three seasons. Their best finish during this time was sixth place in 2008–09. They were moved down to a lower league again in 2010.
