Early Beginnings

Long ago, during the Roman era, a watchtower stood in Felsenau. This tower was part of the Rhine river's defenses. Leuggern itself was first mentioned in records in 1231. Back then, it was called Lutgern.

In the 13th century, Leuggern was part of the Habsburg family's lands. Later, in the 14th century, it became a district under the Habsburgs' local ruler, called a Vogt. In 1415, the Swiss Confederation took control of Aargau. Leuggern then became part of the Swiss Confederation's County of Baden.

Knights Hospitaller

The Knights Hospitaller were an important group in Leuggern. They were a religious and military order. In 1248, they received a lot of land here. This land became their "Commandry" in Leuggern. A Commandry was like a main house or center for the Knights.

By 1251, a monastery was built in Leuggern. Seven monks lived there in 1257. The leader of the Commandry moved his base to Leuggern in 1268. This made Leuggern a very important center for the Knights Hospitaller in the region. They owned a lot of land and were very wealthy.

Changes Over Time

Leuggern stayed with the Knights Hospitaller until 1806. After that, the Commandry building and its property went to the Canton of Aargau. In 1819, the building became private property. Later, in 1895, it was used as a hospital for older and sick people. This was a first step towards the larger District Hospital that opened in 1897.

In 1816, the villages of Böttstein and Oberleibstadt separated from Leuggern. They became their own independent towns. The main village church was built between 1851 and 1853. It has a mix of old Greek and Roman styles with some Gothic touches. A school for the district was built in 1864.

River and Transport

The Aare river used to flood the village of Gippingen often. But between 1887 and 1904, the river's course was changed to prevent floods. A large dam was built on the Aare river between Leuggern and Klingnau from 1931 to 1935. This dam helps power the hydroelectric plant at Klingnau.

Old ferries were replaced by bridges in 1892 and 1935. In 1926, a Postauto (bus) route started, connecting Leuggern to Döttingen.

Local Industries

By 1900, growing grapes for wine had completely stopped in Leuggern. In 1899, a gypsum factory and mine opened in Felsenau. Gypsum is a mineral used to make plaster. The factory made plaster until 1960 and plasterboard until 1989. Today, the hospital is the biggest employer in Leuggern. In 2000, most jobs in the town were in the service industry.
