About Lincoln Peak

Lincoln Peak is a significant mountain in the Green Mountains range. It reaches an elevation of 3,975 feet (about 1,212 meters) above sea level. This makes it one of the taller peaks in the area. The mountain is a key part of the natural landscape of central Vermont.

Who was Benjamin Lincoln?

Lincoln Peak is named after a very important person: Major General Benjamin Lincoln. He was a brave soldier during the American Revolutionary War. General Lincoln played a big role in the American victory at the Battle of Saratoga. This battle was a turning point in the war.

The town of Lincoln, where the summit of the peak is located, is also named after Benjamin Lincoln. This shows how much he was respected.

Water from the Mountain

Water flows from Lincoln Peak in many directions. This is called a watershed. All the rain and melting snow from the mountain eventually makes its way to Lake Champlain. Lake Champlain is a large lake located between Vermont and New York.

From Lake Champlain, the water flows north into the Richelieu River in Québec, Canada. Then, it joins the mighty Saint Lawrence River, which finally empties into the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and out to the Atlantic Ocean.

  • The south side of Lincoln Peak drains into Lincoln Brook. This brook then flows into the Mad River.
  • The east side of the mountain sends water into Bradley Brook, which also joins the Mad River.
  • The northeast side drains into Clay Brook, another stream that flows into the Mad River.
  • The Mad River then flows into the Winooski River, which finally reaches Lake Champlain.
  • On the west side, various small streams flow into Beaver Meadow Brook. This brook then joins the New Haven River, which flows into Otter Creek, and finally into Lake Champlain.

Fun Things to Do

Lincoln Peak is a popular spot for outdoor activities. The Long Trail, a famous hiking trail that runs the length of Vermont, goes right over the summit ridge of Lincoln Peak. Hikers can enjoy amazing views from the top.
