Early Muslim Rulers (640–661)

After the early Muslim conquests, Egypt became part of the growing Islamic empire. The leaders during this time were called governors, and they were chosen by the Caliphs (the main leaders of the Muslim world).

Tulunid Dynasty (868–905)

The Tulunids were a family of rulers who became very powerful in Egypt. They were still officially under the Abbasid Caliphate, but they ruled Egypt almost like their own independent kingdom.

Ayyubid Sultanate (1171–1252)

The Ayyubids were a powerful family, with Saladin as their most famous leader. He ended the Fatimid rule and brought Egypt back under the Abbasid Caliphate, though he ruled as a powerful Sultan.

Mamluk Sultanate (1250–1517)

The Mamluks were a powerful group of soldier-slaves who eventually took control of Egypt. They established their own Sultanate and ruled for a long time. There were two main Mamluk dynasties: the Bahri and the Burji.

Burji Mamluks (1382-1389, 1390–1517)

The Burji Mamluks were another group of Mamluks who took power from the Bahri Mamluks. They ruled until the Ottoman Empire conquered Egypt.
