List of tallest buildings in Houston facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Houston, the largest city in Texas, is home to many tall buildings! There are 97 completed skyscrapers that are taller than 427 feet (130 meters). About 50 of these buildings are even taller than 492 feet (150 meters).

The very tallest building in Houston is the JPMorgan Chase Tower. It stands at an amazing 1,002 feet (305 meters) in Downtown Houston. This building was finished in 1982. It's not just the tallest building in Houston, but also the tallest in all of Texas! It's even one of the tallest buildings in the entire United States.

Right behind it is the Wells Fargo Plaza, which is 992 feet (302 meters) tall and was finished in 1983. The Williams Tower, completed in 1982, is the third tallest at 901 feet (275 meters). Did you know that seven out of the ten tallest buildings in Texas are located right here in Houston?

The story of skyscrapers in Houston began a long time ago. The first building considered a "skyscraper" was the original Binz Building, built in 1895. It had 6 floors! Later, it was taken down and replaced by newer, taller buildings. Houston's first building over 492 feet (150 meters) was the El Paso Energy Building, finished in 1962. After a tough time for real estate in the late 1980s, Houston didn't get many new big office buildings until 2002. That's when 1500 Louisiana Street was completed.

As of 2017, there were four more tall buildings being built, each planned to be at least 427 feet (130 meters) tall. The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, a group that tracks tall buildings, says Houston's skyline is one of the best. It ranks 2nd in the Southern United States and 4th in the whole country for its number of tall buildings!
