History of Mandeville

Mandeville was started in 1834 by Bernard Xavier de Marigny de Mandeville. His family was very important in Louisiana. They owned a lot of land in New Orleans. Mandeville was first a farming area. It became a town in 1840.

Mandeville became a popular summer spot. Rich people from New Orleans came to escape the heat. In the mid-1800s, steamboats traveled daily between New Orleans and Mandeville. By the late 1800s, it was a favorite weekend place for middle-class families too.

Bands played music on the steamboats. They also played at dance halls in Mandeville. This made Mandeville one of the first places where "jazz" music was heard outside of New Orleans. Many early jazz artists played here. These included Bunk Johnson, Buddy Petit, Papa Celestin, George Lewis, and Kid Ory.

In the late 1800s, Mandeville had the Harvey School (Mandeville). This school helped students get ready for college.

Two old buildings linked to jazz history are still in Mandeville. Ruby's Roadhouse has been open since the 1920s. It is still a popular bar and music place. The Dew Drop Social and Benevolent Hall opened in 1895. It is on the National Register of Historic Places. This hall hosted many jazz greats. It reopened in 2000 as a live jazz venue.

In 1956, the first part of the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway opened. This road allowed cars to cross the lake. A second part was added in 1969. The new road helped Mandeville grow. It became a place where people lived and commuted to work in New Orleans. This growth continued in the 1980s and 1990s.
