Early Life and Fado Journey
Mariza was born in Lourenço Marques, which is now Mozambique. Her father was Portuguese, and her mother was Mozambican. When she was three years old, her family moved to Lisbon, Portugal. She grew up in old parts of Lisbon called Mouraria and Alfama.
From a young age, Mariza loved to sing. She tried many different music styles. These included gospel, soul, and jazz. Her father really wanted her to sing fado. He believed that singing traditional music would help her fit in more with the Portuguese community.
Becoming a Fado Star
In 1999, a very famous fado singer named Amália Rodrigues passed away. Many people remembered and mourned her. Because of this, fado music became popular again. Mariza was asked to sing a tribute to Amália Rodrigues on TV. This made her friends encourage her to record her own fado album.
She released her first album, Fado em Mim, in 2001. It was a huge success! It sold 100,000 copies, which was amazing for a fado album. Later, the record company released it worldwide. Sales eventually reached over 140,000 copies. One of her popular songs, Transparente, is a special tribute to her African grandmother.
Global Recognition and Performances
Mariza sang the Portuguese national anthem at the 2002 FIFA World Cup football game. This was when South Korea played against Portugal.
Her second album, Fado Curvo, came out in 2003. By then, people saw her as part of the "New Fado" movement. Her voice reminded many of older fado singers like Amália Rodrigues. Her unique way of singing fado songs quickly made her famous around the world. In March 2003, she won an award from BBC Radio 3 for Best European Artist in World Music.
Mariza also sang a duet with Sting called "A Thousand Years." This song was for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. It was on the official pop album for the Olympics, called Unity. In this song, fado was sung in both English and Portuguese.
In 2004, Mariza won an EBBA Award. These awards celebrate new artists who become popular outside their home countries.
Her third album, Transparente, was recorded in Brazil and released in 2005. She performed at Live 8 in Cornwall, England. After this, she was invited to concerts and events all over the world. She helped share Portuguese culture from Australia to the United States. That album became a Top Ten hit in countries like the Netherlands and Spain. Mariza has received awards from many countries.
She has performed at many famous places. These include Carnegie Hall in New York and the Sydney Opera House in Australia. She has also sung at London's Royal Albert Hall and Lisbon's Centro Cultural de Belém.
Her 2007 album, Concerto em Lisboa, was nominated for a Latin Grammy Award. The next year, her album Terra was also nominated for the same award. This album mixed fado with other styles. It included jazz, flamenco, and African sounds.
In 2010, Mariza was on a PBS music show called Sound Tracks: Music Without Borders. She sang her popular song "Minh' Alma." Later in 2010, she released Fado Tradicional. This album went back to the original style of fado. But Mariza still added her own special touch to the music.
In 2011, Mariza was part of a campaign for TAP Portugal airline. She sang in a music video with Brazilian singer Roberta de Sá and Angolan singer Paulo Flores. In 2018, Mariza performed at the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 in Lisbon. She sang "Barco Negro" with Ana Moura at the Grand Final.
In May 2024, Mariza released a new song called "Desamor." It features the artist GSon. This song is from her upcoming album, Amor.
Personal Life
Mariza is married to António Ferreira. They have one son named Martim, who was born in July 2011. Mariza has said that her Catholic faith became stronger after her son's birth. This was because of a promise she made to Our Lady of Fátima.
