History of Meadowlands
Meadowlands got its name because it has a lot of flat, open land that is good for farming. This is unusual for Saint Louis County. The town grew and did well by supporting local farms.
Meadowlands' Busy Past
Years ago, Meadowlands was a busy place. It had many businesses, including:
- a Ford car dealership
- a bank
- a farmer's store
- a grocery store
- a laundry
- a cheese factory
- several restaurants
- a movie theater
There was also a school called Toivola–Meadowlands School. It taught students from kindergarten all the way to 12th grade. The school even had a successful 9-man football team in the 1980s!
Changes Over Time
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the number of large farm families in the area started to decrease. This meant fewer students for the school. Eventually, the school had to close. An attempt to reopen it as a "Charter School" did not work out.
Today, Meadowlands is much quieter. It has one bar and grill, and four places of worship.
New Life for Meadowlands
Recently, businesses in Meadowlands have seen a small boost. This is thanks to more people visiting for tourism, especially for bird-watching. The rivers, lakes, fields, and bog areas around Meadowlands are perfect for seeing many different birds. You can spot tiny songbirds like waxwings or even large Bald Eagles!
Winter also brings more visitors. A former railroad line on the east side of town is now a trail for snowmobiles and ATVs. This trail goes from Alborn in the south up to Pengilly in the north.
Geography of Meadowlands
