History of Mendham Borough
Mendham Borough became its own town on May 15, 1906. Before that, it was part of Mendham Township. The people in the borough wanted things like sidewalks and street lights. But the people in the more rural township didn't want to pay for them. So, they decided to split into two separate areas.
This split helped create other new towns in the Somerset Hills region.
The Phoenix House, a historic building, was bought in 1919 by Arthur Whitney. He gave it to the borough in 1938 to be used as the town hall.
What's in a Name?
The name "Mendham" might come from a town in England called Mendham, Suffolk. Or, it could come from a Native American word, mendom, which means "raspberry." Some people also think it might be named after an Earl of Mendham.
