Plot Summary
The story begins just before Christmas. Drake and Josh's parents, Walter and Audrey, leave for a tropical vacation. Josh is excited about his snowman air balloon, but Megan secretly messes it up. Later, at the mall, Drake tells Josh he's throwing a big Christmas party on the roof of his workplace. Josh isn't sure about it, but Helen, their boss, agrees. She says Drake must dress as Santa at the mall.
While trying to avoid a woman who wants to kiss him, Drake meets a little girl named Mary Alice. She tells him she loves his music. In a hurry to get away, Drake accidentally makes a promise. He says he will give her family the best Christmas ever.
At the party, Drake's friends, Craig and Eric, suggest he sing in the Christmas parade. But Drake says he'll be in Las Vegas for a concert. Later, some unwanted guests crash the party. Josh calls the police. When the police arrive, Josh falls off the roof. He lands in a moving pickup truck and is arrested. In jail, he meets his cellmate, Bludge. Bludge is a tough guy, but Josh entertains him with magic tricks. They agree Bludge will pretend to beat Josh up to keep his tough image.
Drake remembers his promise to Mary Alice. She told him about her sick foster mom and busy foster dad. Drake tries to break Josh out of jail to help him. But Drake gets caught and arrested too. Drake and Josh go to court. Helen acts as their lawyer. She tells Judge Newman about Drake's promise. The judge decides they won't go to jail if they keep their promise.
After court, they meet their strict parole officer, Perry Gilbert. He says he will ask Mary Alice's family if they had the best Christmas ever. If anyone says "no," Drake and Josh will go to jail. The brothers then meet Mary Alice's foster family. The family includes fighting twins Lily and Violet, Zigfee (who speaks an unknown language), know-it-all Trey, and Mary Alice's older brother Luke. Drake and Josh try many ways to give them a great Christmas. But Officer Gilbert keeps ruining their plans.
Drake and Josh ask Megan for help. They bribe her with a rare oboe. But she stops helping when she finds out the oboe is fake.
Josh then visits Officer Gilbert's mother. She explains that as a child, Officer Gilbert wanted a pet chimpanzee for Christmas. He got one, but it attacked him and ran away. This made him hate Christmas. Drake and Josh realize he wants to ruin Christmas for everyone.
Drake and Josh decide to take Mary Alice's family caroling. But no one in the neighborhood listens. So, the group puts on a concert. They perform a rock version of "12 Days of Christmas". The whole family loves it! They decide to perform it in the Christmas parade.
At the parade, Officer Gilbert tricks Crazy Steve. Steve loudly reminds Drake and Josh that they will go to prison if they don't keep their promise. Mary Alice and her family hear this. They think Drake and Josh were only being nice to avoid jail. Heartbroken, they leave.
Even though the family is angry, Drake and Josh are determined to keep their promise. They also send Officer Gilbert a nice chimpanzee as a Christmas gift. This makes him start loving Christmas again. The brothers then borrow Steve's wood chipper, "Sally." They put ice in it to make snow in front of Mary Alice's house. But it shoots large chunks of ice, breaking all the windows. The machine then knocks both brothers out. Officer Gilbert brings them home.
The next morning, the brothers wake up. Mary Alice's family surprises them in the living room. Officer Gilbert told them that Drake and Josh were not using them. The family votes on whether they had the best Christmas ever. Everyone votes "yes"! Drake and Josh are officially free. Bludge, dressed as Santa, comes down the chimney with gifts. Megan gets a real oboe. Josh's girlfriend Mindy arrives too. Steve makes snow using 7,000 pounds of hard cheese. Drake and Josh's parents come home from their bad vacation. Their "bungalow" was a small hut that blew away in a tropical storm. Everyone plays in the "cheese snow," having the best Christmas ever.
