Exploring Miami's Location
Miami is found along the main Gold Coast Highway. It's about 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) south of the famous Surfers Paradise. It's also about 17 kilometers (10.6 miles) north of the border between Queensland and New South Wales, near Coolangatta and Tweed Heads.
Mountains and Hills in Miami
Even though it's a beach town, Miami has a couple of small mountains or hills:
- North Nobby: This hill is about 46 meters (151 feet) tall.
- South Nobby (also called Little Burleigh): This one is smaller, about 7 meters (23 feet) tall.
Beautiful Beaches of Miami
Miami is known for its lovely beaches, perfect for swimming and surfing:
- Nobby Beach: This beach stretches north towards Mermaid Beach.

Most of Miami's shops and businesses are along the Gold Coast Highway. You'll also find some smaller factories and workshops around Christine Avenue. The Gold Coast Highway runs right through Miami, connecting it north and south.
Miami's Past: A Quick Look
The story of Miami began in the early 1920s. People were looking to build new homes in an area called Miami Shore at North Burleigh. They chose the name "Miami Shore" because it sounded like Miami Shores, Florida in the USA.
Early investors built simple wooden or fibro (fiber cement) houses. They either lived in them or rented them out to people on holiday. The Hotel Miami opened in 1925, giving visitors another place to stay. Later, in 1953, tennis courts were built for sports lovers. The large Pizzey Park Sporting Complex opened in 1969, offering many sports facilities.
Miami State High School's History
Miami State High School first opened its doors on January 1, 1963. The principal, William Callinan, wanted to cover up a rocky area. He put up huge yellow letters that said "HI MIAMI HIGH." Today, the sign simply says "MIAMI HIGH."
Local Church
On December 22, 1963, the Calvary Memorial Catholic Church was officially opened. It was built to remember those who served in the Korean War.

Miami has a few special places that are protected because of their history. One of these is the famous Miami State High School Sign. You can find it at 2171 Gold Coast Highway.
Learning in Miami
Miami State High School is a government school for students in Years 7 to 12. It's for both boys and girls. In 2018, the school had 1,255 students and many teachers. It also has a special program for students with disabilities, supported by the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

Miami Day Hospital is a private hospital located at 24 Hillcrest Parade. It provides day surgery and medical care.
Fun Things to Do in Miami
Miami offers many places for sports and recreation:
- Pizzey Park: This is a huge sporting and recreation area on the Gold Coast. You can find it at 80 Pacific Avenue.
- Calvary Catholic Church: This church is located at 50 Redondo Avenue.
- Burleigh Bears Rugby League Football Club: If you like rugby league, this club is also at 80 Pacific Avenue.

Getting Around Miami
Miami has good public transport with frequent bus services. Buses run every 8 to 15 minutes during busy times. Some bus routes include:
- Route 700: Travels between Broadbeach South and Tweed Heads.
- Route 777: An express bus that goes from Broadbeach South to the Gold Coast Airport.
- TX1: A special express service for theme parks, running from Tweed Heads to Dream World.
All bus services on the Gold Coast are managed by Kinetic Group under a contract with Translink.
