Minnamoolka is a fascinating area with important rivers and mountains. The Herbert River forms its north-east border, and the Burdekin River touches its south-east side.
Mountains and Waterways
The locality is quite mountainous because it's part of the Great Dividing Range. This is a huge chain of mountains that runs along the east coast of Australia. The ridge of this range goes right through the west of Minnamoolka.
This mountain ridge creates something called a watershed. Think of it like the roof of a house: rain falling on one side flows in one direction, and rain on the other side flows in a different direction. Here, creeks that start in the north-east flow towards the Herbert River, which eventually reaches the ocean near Macknade and Lucinda. Water from the south-west flows into the Burdekin River, which then goes into the Coral Sea. Other parts of Minnamoolka send water to the Mitchell River and the Gilbert River, both of which flow into the Gulf of Carpentaria.
