The Azuchi-Momoyama period (also known as the Momoyama period) was a very important time in the history of Japan. It lasted from about 1573 to 1606.
This period gets its name from two powerful castles. One was Oda Nobunaga's castle at Azuchi, near Lake Biwa. The other was Toyotomi Hideyoshi's castle at Momoyama near Kyoto. These castles were centers of power during this exciting era.

The Rise of Powerful Leaders
- 1568: A strong leader named Oda Nobunaga entered Kyoto. This was a big step in his plan to unite Japan.
- 1573: Nobunaga forced the last Ashikaga shogun, Ashikaga Yoshiaki, to leave Kyoto. This officially ended the Ashikaga government.
- 1576: The Battle of Nagashino took place. This battle showed the power of firearms in Japanese warfare.
Nobunaga's End and Hideyoshi's Rise
- 1582: Sadly, Nobunaga was betrayed and killed by one of his generals, Akechi Mitsuhide.
- 1583: After Nobunaga's death, Toyotomi Hideyoshi became the next powerful leader. He fought in battles like the Battle of Komaki and Nagakute to secure his power.
Japan's Actions Abroad
- 1592: Hideyoshi decided to invade Korea. This event is known as the Bunroku-Keichō no Eki or the Imjin War.
- September 18, 1598: Hideyoshi died at the age of 63. His death led to new power struggles in Japan.
The Final Unification
- October 21, 1600: The famous Battle of Sekigahara happened. This battle was very important. It decided who would rule Japan next.
- 1603: After winning at Sekigahara, Tokugawa Ieyasu was named Shogun. This started the long-lasting Tokugawa shogunate.
- 1614: The Battle of Osaka (Osaka Fuyu no Jin) began. This was a siege of Osaka Castle.
- 1615: The Battle of Osaka (Osaka Natsu no Jin) ended. This battle finally removed the last threats to Tokugawa rule.
Culture and New Ideas
The Azuchi-Momoyama period was also a time of exciting cultural changes. This culture is often called Momoyama culture.
A Growing Merchant Class
During this time, cities grew bigger. A new group of wealthy merchants became very important. They enjoyed fancy and luxurious things. This led to a rich and vibrant culture.
Trade with Western Countries
Japan also started trading more with countries from the West. Important visitors like Francisco Xavier came to Japan. This brought new ideas and goods to the country.
