Mount Andromache is a large mountain in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada. It stands about 3,033 meters (9,951 feet) tall. This impressive peak is part of the Canadian Rockies.

You can see Mount Andromache from the Icefields Parkway. This road runs along the western side of the mountain. A glacier called the Molar Glacier is located on its northeast side. The closest taller mountain is Mount Hector, which is about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) to the south.

Mountain History

The first people to climb Mount Andromache were James J. McArthur and Tom Riley. They reached the top in 1887. They were part of the Dominion Land Survey, which mapped out land in Canada.

The Alpine Club of Canada officially named the mountain in 1948. They named it after Andromache, a famous character from Greek mythology. She was known as the wife of Hector, which is why the nearby mountain is called Mount Hector.

Rock Formations

Mount Andromache, like other mountains in Banff Park, is made of sedimentary rock. This type of rock forms from layers of sand, mud, and shells that build up over millions of years. These layers were laid down during ancient times, from the Precambrian to the Jurassic periods.

Long ago, these rocks formed in shallow seas. Later, a huge event called the Laramide orogeny happened. This was a time when the Earth's crust moved and pushed these rock layers eastward. This movement caused the rocks to fold and lift, creating the tall mountains we see today.

Mountain Weather

Mount Andromache has a subarctic climate. This means it has very cold and snowy winters. Summer months are usually mild. Winter temperatures can often drop below -20 °C (-4 °F). With the wind, it can feel even colder, sometimes below -30 °C (-22 °F).

The best time to visit and climb Mount Andromache is from July to September. During these months, the weather is usually more pleasant. All the water from rain and melting snow on Mount Andromache flows into streams that eventually join the Bow River.
