Even though it's deep in the park's backcountry, reaching it offers amazing views and scenery. The easiest way to climb Mount Florence is a simple scramble, which means you might need to use your hands a little bit to help you climb over rocks, but it's not difficult rock climbing.
How Mount Florence Got Its Name
Mount Florence is named after a special person named Florence Hutchings. People called her "Floy." She was the first white child born in Yosemite Valley, on August 23, 1864. Florence was known for being adventurous and brave. She loved riding horses and wasn't afraid of challenges. She was also friends with the famous naturalist John Muir. It's believed that John Muir himself named Mount Florence in her honor.
Florence was also a religious person and helped take care of the Yosemite Valley Chapel. Sadly, she passed away at a young age in 1881, when she was just 17 years old.
