Mount Grant is a cool mountain located in the Green Mountains of Vermont, a state in the United States. It's part of the beautiful Breadloaf Wilderness within the Green Mountain National Forest. The very top of the mountain, called the summit, is found in the town of Lincoln in Addison County.
This mountain gets its name from Ulysses S. Grant, who was a famous former president of the United States. Mount Grant is also one of five special peaks that make up Vermont's Presidential Range.
Where the Water Flows
Mount Grant is like a giant sponge that helps feed many rivers and lakes. All the rain and melting snow from the mountain eventually flows into the Lake Champlain area. This entire area is called a drainage basin or watershed, which means all the water here drains into one main place.
The water from the northeast side of Mount Grant flows into a stream called Stetson Brook. From there, it joins the Mad River, then the Winooski River, and finally reaches Lake Champlain.
Water from the south and west sides of Mount Grant takes a different path. It flows into the New Haven River, then into Otter Creek, and also ends up in Lake Champlain. From Lake Champlain, the water travels north into the Richelieu River in Québec, then into the mighty Saint Lawrence River, and eventually reaches the Gulf of Saint Lawrence in the Atlantic Ocean.
Hiking Adventures
If you love hiking, Mount Grant offers some great trails! The famous Long Trail, a long-distance hiking path, goes right over the summit of Mount Grant. The summit is about 3,623 feet high.
From the top, you can see amazing views looking south across the wild Breadloaf Wilderness towards Bread Loaf Mountain. It's a perfect spot for taking photos and enjoying nature.
One popular way to reach the Long Trail near Mount Grant is by using the Cooley Glen Trail. This trail starts in the town of Lincoln. After hiking about 3.2 miles, you'll reach the Cooley Glen Shelter, which is a small building where hikers can rest. From this shelter, Mount Grant is just 0.8 miles north. If you head south from the shelter, you'll find Mount Cleveland about 0.5 miles away.
