Mount Willey is a mountain located in Grafton County, New Hampshire. It is named after Samuel Willey, Jr. (1766–1826) and his family. In 1825, the Willey family moved into a house in Crawford Notch. Sadly, a year later in August 1826, the family tragically died during a large landslide.
Mount Willey is part of the Willey Range, which is a smaller chain of mountains within the larger White Mountains. It is the southernmost peak in the Willey Range and the second highest. Mount Willey stands alongside Mount Field, together forming the western side of Crawford Notch. The very top of Mount Willey is just outside Crawford Notch State Park. It is also located at the northeast edge of the Pemigewasset Wilderness, a protected natural area.
Water Flow from Mount Willey
Water from Mount Willey flows into different rivers depending on which side of the mountain it falls.
Rivers to the East
The north and east sides of Mount Willey drain into the Saco River. This river then flows all the way to the Gulf of Maine at Saco, Maine.
Rivers to the West
The south and west sides of the mountain drain into the North Fork of the Pemigewasset River. This water then joins the East Branch, and later the main Pemigewasset River. Finally, it flows into the Merrimack River, which also reaches the Gulf of Maine, but at Newburyport, Massachusetts.
