Bringing Back Old Shows: DVDs
Nickelodeon Rewind first started as a way to release DVDs of older Nickelodeon TV shows.
Original Rewind DVDs
The very first DVDs in this collection came out on May 17, 2005. These were for Clarissa Explains It All and The Adventures of Pete and Pete. They sold really well! Because of this, Nickelodeon released Season 2 of Pete and Pete in November 2005.
Other releases were planned but never happened. This might have been because Nickelodeon's parent company, Viacom, split with CBS. Another reason could be that it was too hard to get permission for all the actors and owners of shows like You Can't Do That on Television to put them on DVD.
Amazon.com DVDs
In 2008, Nickelodeon made a deal with Amazon.com. This allowed Amazon to sell special DVD sets of Nickelodeon shows. These included Doug, Rugrats, Rocko's Modern Life, and Hey Arnold!.
Many people thought these DVDs were too expensive because they were made "on demand" (burned when ordered). However, the prices for many of these DVDs were lowered in 2014.
Shout! Factory DVDs
In 2011, Nickelodeon partnered with Shout! Factory. This company started releasing classic Nickelodeon shows on regular DVDs. These DVDs were digitally improved, meaning they looked and sounded better. Some of the shows released this way include Hey Dude, Rocko's Modern Life, The Angry Beavers, CatDog, Hey Arnold!, Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, The Wild Thornberrys, and Danny Phantom.
Cool Merchandise
Nickelodeon Rewind is also a brand for merchandise and clothing. These items feature characters and logos from older Nickelodeon shows. They were first sold only at Hot Topic stores.
The collection included items from shows like Salute Your Shorts, Double Dare, Hey Dude, Rocko's Modern Life, Hey Arnold!, Rugrats, The Fairly OddParents, SpongeBob SquarePants, The Adventures of Pete and Pete, Clarissa Explains It All, Invader Zim, and You Can't Do That on Television.
In 2011, Nickelodeon also launched an online store through Zazzle. This store sells even more classic Nickelodeon merchandise.
TV Blocks and Channels
Nickelodeon Rewind has appeared as special TV programming blocks and was even rumored to become a full channel.
2006 TV Block
In the spring of 2006, Nickelodeon aired an hour-long block called Nickelodeon Rewind. It played every Sunday from 1:00 to 2:00 pm EDT. This block featured shows like The Wild Thornberrys, The Angry Beavers, Rocko's Modern Life, Rocket Power, and The Ren & Stimpy Show. It also showed old Nickelodeon commercials and channel ads. Viewers could even vote online for the shows they wanted to see!
Rumors of a New Channel
Around 2008, there were rumors that Nick GAS might be replaced by a channel called Nickelodeon Rewind. However, Nick GAS was instead replaced by "The N" when it closed down on December 31, 2007. It seems the idea for a Nickelodeon Rewind channel was dropped.
Years later, in September 2015, Nickelodeon hinted at a new block called "The Splat." This block would play shows from the 1990s and early 2000s. People thought "The Splat" (which is now called NickRewind) might become a separate channel. But Nickelodeon later confirmed it would just be a TV block.
On-Demand Shows
Nick Rewind started offering shows on demand in 2010 through Comcast. Later, it was also added to Verizon Fios, DirecTV, and Cablevision. You could watch shows like CatDog, Doug, The Angry Beavers, The Fairly OddParents, Hey Arnold!, and Rugrats.
The 2019 Programming Block
In March 2011, Nickelodeon announced a new TV block for TeenNick called "The '90s Are All That." It started airing on July 25, 2011. Nickelodeon made this decision because many fans wanted to watch their favorite childhood shows again. Millions of fans on Facebook were asking for it!
This block airs every night from 10:00 pm to 6:00 am EST. As of February 2021, it mostly shows animated series like Hey Arnold!, Rugrats, The Wild Thornberrys, Doug, and Rocko's Modern Life. Live-action shows used to air on the block, but they stopped in May 2020.
On March 18, 2019, the block changed its name to "NickRewind." This brought the Nickelodeon Rewind brand back to TV!
