History of Niedermuhlern

Niedermuhlern was first written about in the year 1241. Back then, it was called Muolerrun.

Scientists have found signs of very old settlements here. A bronze ax from prehistoric times was found in Niederblacken. There are also remains of a wall from the Roman times at Sidenberg. An old grave from the early Middle Ages was found on Sandackerhubel.

By the 1200s, different people and groups owned parts of the village. These included citizens from Bern and religious groups like the Münchenbuchsee Commandery and Frienisberg and Köniz Abbeys. The right to make local laws and decisions for the village changed hands many times. Finally, in 1600, Bern took over these rights.

Under Bern's rule, a leader called a Schultheiss (like a mayor) managed the village. Until 1699, Niedermuhlern was part of the parish (church area) of Belp. After that, it became part of the Zimmerwald parish.

Niedermuhlern has always been a farming village. Today, a bus service called PostAuto connects it to bigger cities nearby. In 1951, an engineer named Willy Schaerer built the Sternwarte Uecht (Uecht Observatory) in Niedermuhlern. For 20 years, from 1968 to 1988, the University of Bern used the village for a special lab to study the sun.
