City History
The story of North Richland Hills began in 1848. A man named W.S. Peters helped 600 families move to the area. This was part of a special land grant. In 1849, Tarrant County was created. It was named after General Edward H. Tarrant. The nearby town of Birdville became the first county seat. For over 100 years, the area was mostly farms and ranches.
How NRH Became a City
In 1952, Clarence Jones started to divide his 268-acre (1.08 km2) dairy farm. He turned it into a new neighborhood. This area is now known as Cummings Drive. In 1953, local residents wanted to join the city of Richland Hills. But they were told no. So, they decided to start their own city.
An election was held. The 268-acre (1.08 km2) Jones Farm, with 500 people, officially became the City of North Richland Hills. The first streets were named after local families. The next streets, added in 1954, were named after cars. The first part of the neighborhood had 188 homes. They all had to be built with brick or stone.
Growth of the City
By 1957, North Richland Hills was very close to Smithfield. By 1960, Smithfield had joined North Richland Hills. The city's population grew quickly. In 1960, there were 8,662 people. By 1970, that number more than doubled to 16,514.
The population kept growing fast. It reached 30,592 in 1980 and 45,895 in 1990. In 2000, there were 55,635 residents. By 2010, the population was 63,343. In 2020, it reached 69,917 people.
