North Yolla Bolly Mountain, often called North Yolla Bolly, is a tall peak in Northern California. It stands about 7,868-foot (2,398 m) high. This mountain is part of the Klamath Mountains and the Coast Ranges. You can find it in Trinity County.

The mountain is in a quiet area called the Yolla Bolly-Middle Eel Wilderness. This wilderness is part of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. North Yolla Bolly is about 50 miles (80 km) west of Red Bluff. It is also about 13 miles (21 km) away from Mount Linn, which is the highest point in the Coast Ranges south of the Trinity Alps.

About the Mountain

North Yolla Bolly is very close to Black Rock Mountain, which is 7,755-foot (2,364 m) tall. These two peaks are often seen as "sister peaks." Sometimes, North Yolla Bolly and Black Rock Mountain, along with other nearby peaks, are called the "North Yolla Bolly Mountains." These peaks are high points in the California Coast Ranges.

A small lake called North Yolla Bolly Lake is found on the mountain's north side. This lake is a tarn, which is a lake formed in a bowl-shaped hollow carved by a glacier. You can reach this area by following a trail from Stuart Gap. On a clear day, if you are at the top of North Yolla Bolly, you can see far away. You might spot Mount Shasta, Lassen Peak, and even the Sierra Nevada mountain range.

Waterways and Rivers

North Yolla Bolly Mountain helps divide the starting points of two important rivers. These are the South Fork Trinity River and Cottonwood Creek.

A part of the mountain, called Skylight Ridge, touches the beginning of the Middle Fork Eel River. This spot is special because it is a triple point. This means it's where the water from three major river systems in Northern California separates. These three systems are the Klamath, Sacramento, and Eel River.

What's in a Name?

The name "Yolla Bolly" comes from the Wintu language. In Wintu, it means "snowy peak." This name fits well because North Yolla Bolly gets a lot of snow every winter. Many other high peaks in the Coast Ranges also receive heavy snowfall each year. These snowy peaks stretch from the Snow Mountain National Wilderness all the way to the Oregon border.
