The Nuangola Outlet is a small stream, also called a tributary, located in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. It flows into a larger stream known as Little Wapwallopen Creek. This stream is about 1.8 miles (2.9 km) long and runs through Rice Township. The area of land that drains water into the Nuangola Outlet, called its watershed, covers about 2.35 square miles (6.1 km²). The land around the stream has a type of soil left by glaciers, known as Wisconsinan Till, and different kinds of rocks like sandstone, shale, and coal. You'll also find several lakes and wet, marshy areas (wetlands) nearby. Back in the 1970s, people noted that the water in Nuangola Outlet was very clean.

Where Does Nuangola Outlet Flow?

The Nuangola Outlet starts at Nuangola Lake in Rice Township. This is just a short distance east of the border with the town of Nuangola.

The stream first flows east for a short distance. Along this path, it goes through one lake and then enters another. From the southern end of this second lake, the stream turns and flows south. After a bit more travel, it passes through two more small lakes.

Next, the Nuangola Outlet crosses over Interstate 81, a major highway. After crossing the highway, the stream changes direction again, flowing southeast and then east. Soon after, the stream reaches its meeting point, or confluence, with the Little Wapwallopen Creek. The Nuangola Outlet joins Little Wapwallopen Creek about 14.55 miles (23.4 km) before the creek reaches its own end.

Geography and Land Around the Stream

The land around the Nuangola Outlet has interesting features. Near where the stream ends, its elevation is about 1056 feet (322 meters) above sea level. Where the stream begins, its elevation is higher, between 1180 and 1200 feet (360 to 366 meters) above sea level.

The Nuangola Outlet is located just south of a place called Penobscot Knob.

Most of the ground near the Nuangola Outlet is covered by a type of soil called Wisconsinan Till. This soil was left behind by glaciers long ago. However, you can also find solid rock, called bedrock, near the stream. This bedrock is made of different kinds of rocks like sandstone, conglomerate, shale, and coal. These rocks are especially common on Penobscot Mountain.

Nuangola Outlet's Watershed

The watershed of the Nuangola Outlet covers an area of about 2.35 square miles (6.1 km²). This entire area is located within the United States Geological Survey map section known as Wilkes-Barre West.

There is a facility that helps manage water from homes in the Laurel Lake Village area. This facility can handle about 87,500 gallons of water per day. This treated water then flows into the Little Wapwallopen Creek through the Nuangola Outlet.

The watershed of Nuangola Outlet has several lakes, including Nuangola Lake itself. Nuangola Lake is quite large, covering about 97 acres. There are also several wetlands, which are areas of land that are often wet or marshy, within the watershed.

History of the Stream

The Nuangola Outlet was officially added to the Geographic Names Information System on August 2, 1979. This system keeps track of names and locations of places in the United States. Its special identification number in the system is 1193052.

In the 1970s, people who studied the stream found that the water quality of the Nuangola Outlet was "excellent," meaning it was very clean and healthy.

Wildlife in the Stream

Unfortunately, the number of trout fish living in the Nuangola Outlet has gone down a lot. Their populations have been reduced by more than half.
