History of Nueva Germania
Nueva Germania was founded in 1886 along the Aguaray-Guazú River. It was about 250 kilometers (155 miles) from Asunción. Five families, mostly poor, came from Germany to start the settlement. Later, more families joined them.
The group was led by Bernhard Förster and his wife, Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche. Elisabeth was the sister of the famous German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. The German settlers moved to the Paraguayan rainforest with big ideas. They wanted to create a perfect community.
Life in the colony was very hard. The environment was tough, and they didn't have enough supplies. Many settlers got sick or didn't have enough food. Diseases like malaria were common. Many people who survived these challenges decided to leave Nueva Germania. Those who stayed often married each other.
Bernhard Förster, who had arranged for the land, left the settlers. He died just three years later in 1889 in the city of San Bernardino. His wife, Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche, went back to Germany in 1893.
21st Century Life
Today, Nueva Germania is a quiet community in San Pedro. Most people work in agriculture. They are known for growing yerba mate.
Starting in 2004, an American conductor named David Woodard visited the settlement many times. Even in 2013, some German traditions and culture remained. Most people in the area still speak a mix of German and Guaraní.
