History of Oftringen
Early Settlements and Beginnings
People have lived near Oftringen for a very long time. The first signs of humans here date back to the mesolithic era, which was a period in the Stone Age. Later, during the Roman era, a farm was built where two roads crossed. There were also settlements by the Alamanni people.
The name Oftringen was first written down in the year 924. For many years, the village was controlled by the Counts of Frohburg. In 1299, it came under the rule of the Habsburg family.
Bernese Rule and Changes
In 1415, the area became part of Bern. Oftringen was then part of the township of Aarburg. It stayed with Bern until 1798.
In 1528, the Protestant Reformation came to Oftringen. This changed the religion of the village. A special church court was set up in 1667. The first schoolhouse was built in 1663, and another one was added in 1740 in a small village called Küngoldingen. A bigger district school was built much later, in 1969–70.
Oftringen was part of the parish of Zofingen until 1920. That year, Oftringen got its own church parish. The main church for the parish was built in 1933–34.
Roads, Railways, and Growth
In the 1700s, Bern improved its road network. This meant that important roads connecting Bern to Zurich and Basel to Lucerne crossed in Oftringen. This made the town a busy place.
Later, in 1856, a railway line from Olten to Lucerne was built. Even though the station was in Aarburg, it helped Oftringen. Another railway line, the Aarau-Zofingen line, was built in 1875-77. In 1914, a train station was added in Küngoldingen.
Because of all the traffic and transport, the town center shifted. Many businesses opened near the main road crossing. In 1825, a paper mill started, marking the beginning of industry in Oftringen. Textile factories also opened along the river. In the 1900s, chemical and metal industries also came to the village. By 1920, about 65% of people worked in factories.
