History of Orange Village
The area known as Orange Township was first settled in 1815. It officially became a township in 1820. The first settler in the township was Serenus Bumett. He arrived as part of the settlement of the Connecticut Western Reserve. The name "Orange" was chosen because many early settlers came from Orange, Connecticut.
In 1831, James A. Garfield, who later became a President, was born in Orange Township. However, the original Orange Township has since been divided into five separate parts. These parts are Orange Village, Hunting Valley, Moreland Hills, Pepper Pike, and Woodmere. President Garfield's birth and early childhood actually happened in what is now Moreland Hills.
Orange Village, which is the southwest part of the original township, officially became a village in 1929.
