Our (river) facts for kids
The Our river is a cool river that flows through three different countries: Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany! It's a "tributary" (which means it flows into) of the Sauer river. And guess what? The Sauer river then flows into the mighty Rhine river, so the Our is part of the huge Rhine river system.

Our River's Journey
The Our river is about 78 kilometres (48 miles) long. That's like driving for almost an hour at highway speed! About 52.1 kilometres (32.4 miles) of its length flows through Luxembourg. The area of land that drains water into the Our river, called its drainage basin, is about 187 square kilometres (72 square miles).
Where the Our River Starts
The Our river begins its journey in southeastern Belgium. Its source is near a place called Manderfeld, in the Büllingen area of the Liège province. It starts high up, at an altitude of about 643 metres (2,110 feet).
Our River's Path
As the river flows, it generally heads south. For a while, it forms part of the border between Germany and Belgium. After passing a town called Ouren, it then becomes the border between Germany and Luxembourg. The old, historic town of Vianden in Luxembourg is located right on the Our river.
Where the Our River Ends
The Our river eventually joins the Sauer river. This happens in a German town called Wallendorf, in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Here, the Our river is at an altitude of about 177 metres (581 feet).
The Our Dam
North of Vianden, there's a large structure called the Our Dam. This dam helps to control the river's flow.
Rivers that Flow into the Our
Many smaller rivers and streams flow into the Our river. These are called its tributaries. Here are some of the main ones that are longer than 5 km:
- Left Tributaries (these join the Our from the left side if you're looking downstream):
- Auw - 5.9 kilometres (3.7 miles)
- Ihrenbach - 15.9 kilometres (9.9 miles)
- Irsen - 35.5 kilometres (22.1 miles)
- Teggelbach - 5.0 kilometres (3.1 miles)
- Right Tributaries (these join the Our from the right side):
- Medenderbach - 7.5 kilometres (4.7 miles)
- Kolvenderbach - 8.7 kilometres (5.4 miles)
- Weberbach - 6.1 kilometres (3.8 miles)
- Braunlauf - 17.8 kilometres (11.1 miles)
- Ulf - 17.8 kilometres (11.1 miles)
