History of Ovid
The land where Ovid is located was originally home to parts of the Iroquois people.
In 1779, the Sullivan Expedition traveled through this area. This was a military campaign during the American Revolution. Later, this region became part of the Central New York Military Tract. This land was used to pay soldiers who fought in the war. Andrew Dunlap, who settled here, is thought to be the first settler in the entire county.
The town of Ovid was officially created in 1794. At that time, it was part of Onondaga County. Over the years, parts of Ovid were used to form other towns. For example, in 1802, the Town of Hector was formed from Ovid. In 1817, the Town of Covert was also created from Ovid's land.
