Early Days and Native Americans
Long ago, the Owasco area was home to the Cayuga people. They were one of the groups that made up the Iroquois Confederacy, a powerful alliance of Native American nations. The Cayuga lived mostly between Owasco and Cayuga lakes.
In the mid-1600s, Jesuit missionaries (members of a Catholic religious order) visited the Cayuga. They set up missions to share their beliefs. Around 1660, there were about 1,500 Cayuga people.

The first Europeans settled in this area around 1792. A man named Herman Mesgow was one of the earliest settlers.
After the American Revolution (the war where the United States became independent), many Cayuga people moved to Canada. This happened after the Treaty of Canandaigua in 1794. However, some Cayuga groups were allowed to keep small areas of land, called reservations, in New York.
The town of Owasco was officially created in 1802. It was formed from a larger town called Aurelius.
