Paull Hobom Shin (born Shin Hobom; September 27, 1935 – April 12, 2021) was an American politician and teacher. He served in the Washington State Senate, which is part of the state's government. He was the first person of Korean descent to be elected to the Washington State Legislature.

Shin was a member of the Democratic Party. He represented the 21st Legislative District in Washington. This area is in southwest Snohomish County. It includes cities like Mukilteo, Everett, Edmonds, and Lynnwood.

Paull Shin's Early Life and Learning Journey

Paull Shin was born in Korea in 1935. When he was only four years old, he lost his parents. He had to live on the streets of Seoul and beg for food to survive.

When the Korean War started in 1950, his life changed. He became a houseboy for some U.S. Army officers. In 1954, one of these officers, a dentist named Ray Paull, adopted him. Paull brought Shin to live with him in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Even though Shin had never gone to school in Korea and knew very little English, he worked hard. He completed his GED (a high school equivalency test) in just 18 months. He then went on to college.

Shin earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Brigham Young University. He also earned a master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh. Later, he received another master's degree and a PhD from the University of Washington.

Paull Shin's Political Career

After finishing his education, Paull Shin became involved in politics. In 1992, he was elected to the Washington State House of Representatives. This is a group of elected officials who make laws for the state.

Shin ran for other important political jobs too. In 1994, he tried to become a member of the United States House of Representatives. This is a national role in the U.S. government. In 1996, he ran for Washington lieutenant governor. He lost both races by a small number of votes.

In 1998, Shin was elected to the Washington State Senate. This is another important part of the state's law-making body. He served there for many years.

On January 7, 2014, Senator Shin decided to leave his job in the State Senate. He resigned because he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.
