Paull Shin's Early Life and Learning Journey
Paull Shin was born in Korea in 1935. When he was only four years old, he lost his parents. He had to live on the streets of Seoul and beg for food to survive.
When the Korean War started in 1950, his life changed. He became a houseboy for some U.S. Army officers. In 1954, one of these officers, a dentist named Ray Paull, adopted him. Paull brought Shin to live with him in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Even though Shin had never gone to school in Korea and knew very little English, he worked hard. He completed his GED (a high school equivalency test) in just 18 months. He then went on to college.
Shin earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Brigham Young University. He also earned a master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh. Later, he received another master's degree and a PhD from the University of Washington.
